The suburb is mostly homes where people live, but there are a few shops on Hillcrest Avenue. Nearby suburbs like Hurstville and South Hurstville are separate places located to the northeast.

Discovering Hurstville Grove's Past

Early Land Grants and Owners

The land where Hurstville Grove now stands has a long history. Back in 1808, Captain John Townson and his brother Robert Townson were given large areas of land here. Captain Townson received about 1950 acres (around 7.9 square kilometres). This land covers what is now Hurstville and parts of Bexley.

His brother Robert was given land that became Penshurst, Mortdale, and parts of Peakhurst. The next year, Captain Townson got even more land, about 250 acres (1 square kilometre), in areas like Kingsgrove and Beverly Hills.

However, the Townson brothers weren't very happy with this land. It was covered in thick trees and wasn't good for raising sheep for wool. Because of this, they probably never actually lived on their land.

Changes in Ownership and Names

In 1812, a rich merchant named Simeon Lord (who lived from 1771 to 1840) bought the land. He called his new property Lord's Bush. After Simeon Lord passed away, the land was taken over by John Rose Holden and James Holt from the Bank of N.S.W..

Later, in 1850, Michael Gannon (1800–61) bought the land. It then became known as Gannon's Forest. The first post office in the area, called Gannon's Forest post office, opened in 1881.

The local school was already known as Hurstville by 1876. When the railway line was built and a station opened in 1884, it was named "Hurstville" after the school. The Hurstville area officially became its own municipality (a type of local government area) in 1887.
