Kingsgrove is a suburb located in Southern Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It's about 13 kilometers (8 miles) south-west of the main Sydney city center. Kingsgrove is special because it's part of three different local councils: the City of Canterbury-Bankstown, Bayside Council, and Georges River Council.

History of Kingsgrove

Kingsgrove got its name from Governor Philip Gidley King. In 1804, Governor King gave 500 acres (about 2 square kilometers) of land to Hannah Laycock. She named her farm "King's Grove" to honor him. Later, this name was shortened to Kingsgrove. This land was roughly where Kingsgrove Road, Bexley Road, and William Street are today.

The first inn, or hotel, in the area was called the Man of Kent. It opened in 1850 on Kingsgrove Road. Later, in 1856, a man named Thomas Smithson started a tobacco factory nearby. He sold snuff and cigars in Sydney. His son, James, even made and sold wine from Smithson's Wine Bar, which is now the Bexley Golf Course. Kingsgrove really started to grow after its railway station opened in 1931.
