Husum (pronounced HOO-zoom) is a cool town in Germany. It's the main town of the Nordfriesland district in Schleswig-Holstein. A famous writer named Theodor Storm was born here. He called Husum "the grey town by the sea." Every year, Husum also hosts an amazing international piano festival. It's called Raritäten der Klaviermusik, which means "Rarities of Piano Music." This festival started in 1986.

Husum's Story: A Look Back in Time

Husum was first mentioned way back in 1252. This was when King Abel of Denmark was sadly murdered.

How Storms Shaped Husum

Like many towns along the North Sea, Husum has often been changed by big storm floods. In 1362, a huge storm flood called the "Grote Mandrenke" hit the town. It flooded Husum and created the inland harbour we see today. Before this big storm, Husum was not right on the coast. The people of Husum used this chance to build a marketplace. This helped the town's economy grow a lot!

Between 1372 and 1398, Husum grew very quickly. Two new villages were started: Oster-Husum (East-Husum) and Wester-Husum (West-Husum). The name Husum first appeared in 1409 on an old map called the Carta Marina.

Important Milestones for Husum

Husum got its first church in 1431. In 1582, it received special trading rights. Then, in 1603, it was given the right to govern itself as a town. This was granted by Alexander, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg. Husum suffered from more big floods in 1634 and 1717.

Where is Husum?

Husum is right on the North Sea. It sits by the Bay of Husum. It's about 82 kilometers (51 miles) west of Kiel. It's also 139 kilometers (86 miles) northwest of Hamburg. And it's 43 kilometers (27 miles) southwest of Flensburg.
