"I Love Trash" is a very famous song. It comes from the popular TV show Sesame Street. Jeff Moss wrote both the music and the words for the song.

The song is sung by Oscar the Grouch. Oscar is a green, furry Muppet character. He is known for loving all things dirty and trashy! Caroll Spinney performed Oscar. The song first appeared in the very first season of Sesame Street in 1969. It has been sung many times since then.

Oscar's Performances

Oscar the Grouch has sung "I Love Trash" in many different ways. In one episode from Season 29, Oscar sang a special version. It was called "Grouches Love Trash." He sang it to his niece, Irvine.

In episode 3891, Oscar's old friend Felix the Grouch visited. Felix sang a different version called "I Love Cleaning." But Oscar stuck to his favorite, "I Love Trash"!

Another time, Oscar's Trash Can grew to a huge size. The words of the song were changed to fit the giant trash can. You can see a short clip of this in Sesame Street All-Star 25th Birthday: Stars and Street Forever!.

Oscar also sang the song in a show called Here Come the Puppets!. He was joined by Bruno the Trashman, who was on rollerskates! Oscar also performed the song on The Bonnie Hunt Show. On September 26, 2013, Oscar and Big Bird sang "I Love Trash" together on The Colbert Report.

Many other people and characters have sung "I Love Trash" or their own versions of it.

  • The singer k.d. lang sang this song. She was a guest star on The Jim Henson Hour. Her episode was all about garbage.
  • In the CD-ROM game The Three Grouchketeers, Grover, Telly, and Zoe each sang a verse. They changed the words to fit their own interests.
  • Steven Tyler, the lead singer of the band Aerosmith, recorded a new version. This was for the album Elmopalooza.
  • A small part of the song was sung by a group of socks. This happened in Sesame Street 4-D Movie Magic. It was during Oscar's imagination sequence. In his dream, Sesame Street turned into a giant garbage dump.
  • On Plaza Sésamo, which is the Mexican version of Sesame Street, a character called Multimonstruo performed a rock version. Multimonstruo also loves trash!
  • At the Jim Henson's Musical World concert on April 14, 2012, many characters performed the song. These included Elmo, Ernie, Bert, Cookie Monster, Gordon, Bob, Susan, Leela, Gina, Alan, and Maria.
  • In an episode of the TV show Family Guy, a character named Meg sang a very off-key version. She was dressed up as Oscar the Grouch.
