Ice Peak is a type of volcano called a stratovolcano. It is found in British Columbia, Canada. This peak is about 39 kilometers (24 miles) west of a place called Tatogga. It is also very close to Mount Edziza, only about 3 kilometers (2 miles) south.

Ice Peak sits on a large flat area made of volcanic rock. This area was formed by lava flows from the huge Mount Edziza volcanic complex. Ice Peak last erupted during a time period called the Holocene. This period started about 11,700 years ago and continues to today.

What is Ice Peak?

Ice Peak is a stratovolcano. This means it is a tall, cone-shaped volcano. It is built up by many layers of hardened lava, ash, and rocks. These layers are from past eruptions.

The top of Ice Peak is what's left of a small caldera. A caldera is a large bowl-shaped hollow. It forms when the ground collapses after a volcanic eruption. Over time, glaciers have worn away much of this caldera.

Why is it called Ice Peak?

This volcano gets its name because it is almost completely surrounded by glaciers. Glaciers are huge, slow-moving rivers of ice. They cover much of the mountain, making it look icy.

Location and Surroundings

Ice Peak is part of the Tahltan Highland mountain range. It is also very close to Mount Edziza, which is a much larger volcano. Ice Peak actually overlaps with a much older volcano called Armadillo Peak. Armadillo Peak formed about 7.5 million years ago.
