Discovering Mount Edziza
Mount Edziza is part of a special area called the Stikine Volcanic Belt. This belt has many volcanoes that could become active again. Mount Edziza itself is a shield volcano. It started erupting about 10 million years ago. Its last known eruption was around 1,340 years ago.
How Mount Edziza Formed
Mount Edziza is made up of many cinder cones. These are small, cone-shaped hills. It also has many blocky lava flows. These flows still look much like they did when they first formed.
The Mount Edziza area is the second biggest volcanic spot in the northern Stikine Volcanic Belt. It is also one of the largest in all of Canada. The area includes the Mount Edziza Plateau. This is a very large volcanic flat area. It is about 65 kilometers long and 20 kilometers wide.
The plateau is mostly made of basaltic lava flows. On top of this plateau, there are four big stratovolcanoes. These are tall, cone-shaped volcanoes. They are built up by many layers of hardened lava and ash.
Past Volcanic Activity
Many eruptions have happened in the last 10,000 years. These eruptions created many interesting features. Some of these include:
- Desolation
- Mess Lake
- Snowshoe lava fields
- Kana Cone
- Eve Cone
- Cinder Cliff
- Icefall Cone
- Ridge Cone
- Williams Cone
- Walkout Creek
Mount Edziza Provincial Park
Many of the cool volcanic features at Mount Edziza are protected. They are part of Mount Edziza Provincal Park. This is one of the larger provincial parks in British Columbia. The park helps to keep these unique landscapes safe. It also protects the wildlife that lives there.
