Ida began as a stop for stagecoaches in the early 1800s. Travelers going between Monroe and Adrian would stop here. In 1825, the Wayside Inn opened. It was the first business in the area. Early settlers were mostly farmers. They even helped travelers whose wagons got stuck in the muddy trails.

Growth and Development

In 1839, the Michigan Southern Railroad built railway lines through the area. This helped Ida grow. The area was also a popular spot for deer hunting. Ida Township was officially created in 1837. It was named after a local leader, Ida M. Taylor.

The community of Ida got its first post office on July 11, 1844. William Riggs was the first postmaster. The community was officially mapped out in 1868.

Railroads and Local Services

Ida had a train depot along the Michigan Southern Railroad line. This line later became part of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway. The depot was near the fire station on Lewis Avenue. It closed in 1959, and the railway line was eventually removed. Today, Ida does not have a railway.

Ida started its own fire department in 1938. This happened after several local fires. In 1951, the fire department moved to its current location at 3016 Lewis Avenue. It still serves the township with both part-time staff and volunteers.

Important Buildings

One important building in Ida is the St. Joseph Church. It is part of the St. Gabriel Parish, which is very old. The nearby St. Joseph Cemetery has graves dating back to 1841. The current church building was built in 1904.

For the 2020 census, Ida was listed as a new "census-designated place." This means it is counted for statistics, but it is still an unincorporated community. It does not have its own legal government.
