How People Traveled in Idanha's Past

Idanha was once planned to be the end point of a very long railroad that would cross the whole country. This idea was from Colonel T. Egenton Hogg. However, the railroad never got enough money to finish.

Trains did serve Idanha until the 1950s. The train tracks were later removed. This happened because Detroit Lake was being built. The lake now covers where the old Oregon Pacific Railroad tracks used to be.

The Santiam Fire's Impact on Idanha

In 2020, Idanha was one of the small towns in the Santiam Canyon that was badly affected by a large group of wildfires. These fires later became known as the Santiam Fire.

The Lionshead Wildfire started on August 16, 2020. It began in the nearby Willamette National Forest. Firefighters had trouble stopping it because the land was very difficult to reach. The fire slowly grew bigger.

On September 7, 2020, strong east winds, blowing up to 50 miles per hour, pushed the wildfire quickly through the canyon. This canyon is where Idanha and other towns are located. People had to evacuate very quickly and in a chaotic way during the night of September 7–8, 2020.

The Idanha-Detroit Rural Fire Protection District helped a lot. They warned sleeping residents to evacuate. They also tried to put out many small fires caused by power lines falling in the strong wind. Sadly, the nearby city of Detroit was almost completely destroyed. The fire department itself lost its office and two fire trucks.

Over the next few days, the Lionshead wildfire joined with other fires in the area. Together, they became known as the Santiam Wildfire. This huge fire burned over 402,274 acres (162,795 hectares). It was one of the worst wildfires in Oregon's history.
