Ider is located in northeastern Alabama. It sits on top of a place called Sand Mountain. This area is known for its flat top and steep sides. The town is only a few miles west of the Alabama-Georgia state line.
Two important roads meet in Ider: Alabama State Route 75 and Alabama State Route 117. The town covers an area of about 5.4 square miles (14 square kilometers), and all of it is land.

Ider has a local high school and a public library that serve the community.
Ider High School
Ider High School is part of the DeKalb County School System. For the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 school years, it will be known as a 1A school. The current Principal is Tyler Brooks.
Ider Public Library
The Ider Public Library is located at 10808 AL HWY 75. The idea for a community library started around 1994 with the Ider Homemakers Club. The Ider City Council supported the idea. They helped get grants to fund the library's creation and operation. Mrs. Virginia York, who had a degree in Library Science, volunteered many hours to set up the library. Mrs. Virginia Adams was the first librarian.

Ider is a town that enjoys community events, including festivals and parades.
Festivals in Ider
Ider used to hold a festival called Mule Day every year on Labor Day. This festival featured horse and mule pulls, an antique tractor and car show, food, arts and crafts, gospel singing, and games for children. This festival was canceled as of 2017.
Annual Parades in Ider
Ider hosts three annual parades.
- The Mule Day Parade used to happen in September on Labor Day. It went along with the Mule Day festivities. Many community and Ider School organizations took part in this parade. This parade was also canceled as of 2017.
- The Homecoming Parade usually takes place in October. This parade starts the celebrations for Ider High School's Homecoming football game.
- The Christmas Parade happens every year in December. The Ider High School Band is a part of this festive parade.
Attractions and Parks
- Ider Town Park is a great place for outdoor activities. It has a lighted walking trail, a picnic area, tennis courts, baseball fields, a playground, and a stage. This park also used to host the Mule Day festival.
Notable People from Ider
- Todd Greeson is a well-known person from Ider. He has been a member of the Alabama House of Representatives since 1998. This means he helps make laws for the state of Alabama.
