Imdadullah Muhajir Makki (1817 – 1899) was an important Sufi scholar in India. He belonged to the Chishti Sufi group. Sufism is a spiritual way of life in Islam. Many famous scholars were his students. These include Muhammad Qasim Nanautawi and Rashid Ahmad Gangohi. He also led Muslims in a fight against the British during the Indian Rebellion of 1857.

Early Life and Learning

Imdadullah Muhajir Makki was born in Nanauta, British India in 1817. His father, Muhammad Amīn, first named him Imdad Hussain. Later, a respected scholar named Shah Muhammad Ishaq gave him the name Imdādullah.

When he was seven, Imdādullah's mother passed away. She had loved him very much. This made it hard for anyone else to take care of his schooling. He tried to learn the Quran by himself but found it difficult. At 16, he traveled to Delhi with Mamluk Ali Nanautawi. He went there to get a proper education.

Religious Journeys and Work

At eighteen, Imdadullah joined the Naqshbandi Sufi order. This was a step in his spiritual journey. Later, he studied with Mianji (Noor Mohammad Jhanjhanvi). Mianji was a teacher in the Chishti-Sabiri Sufi order. After Mianji's death, Imdadullah spent time alone.

He then felt a strong desire to visit Medina. On December 7, 1845, he arrived in Banares. From there, he traveled to Ottoman Arabia for Hajj. Hajj is a pilgrimage to Mecca. He also visited the tomb of Muhammad in Medina. After his Hajj, he stayed with other scholars. He was advised to return to India after his visit to Medina. Some of his students went with him to Medina.

Fighting for Freedom

In a place called Thana Bhawan, local Muslims chose Imdadullah as their leader. In May 1857, a battle happened. This was the Battle of Shamli. It was fought between Imdadullah's forces and the British. This was part of the larger Indian Rebellion of 1857.
