Early Life and Inspiration

Indrani was born in Kolkata, India, in 1983. She grew up in her family's historic palace. As a child, she volunteered with her mother, helping people with the famous nun Mother Teresa.

In India, she saw extreme poverty, which made her want to make a difference. Later, her family moved to Canada and faced many challenges, including racism and financial hardship. These experiences motivated her to fight for fairness and help others.

Career Beginnings

At age 14, Indrani started modeling and acting. This allowed her to travel and learn about photography and filmmaking from artists around the world. She appeared in magazines like Vogue and Elle.

When she was 18, Indrani used the money she earned from modeling to start a charitable school in her family's home in India. The school, called the Shakti Empowerment Education Foundation, helps give children, especially girls, a better future. Today, it supports over 300 students and also helps women with job training.

While working as a model, she met Markus Klinko, a classical harp player. They became a famous photography team known as Markus + Indrani.

Indrani later earned a scholarship to Princeton University, where she studied cultural anthropology. She graduated with high honors.

A Career in Art and Film

Indrani works as a photographer, director, and producer. She creates films, music videos, and commercials.

Working with Music Legends

While still a student, she was hired by David Bowie and his wife, the model Iman, to create the art for his album Heathen. This was her first major album cover project. Bowie, Iman, and fashion editor Isabella Blow became her mentors.

She went on to create famous album covers for Beyoncé's Dangerously in Love and Lady Gaga's The Fame Monster. She also directed music videos for these artists and many others.

Directing with a Purpose

Indrani's first job as a director was for David Bowie's music video "Valentine's Day" in 2013. The video explored a very serious and difficult topic.

Many of her films are made to help people. She directed a short film called The Girl Epidemic to bring attention to the problem of girls being forced into labor or trafficked. She also worked on Girl Rising, India, a film about the importance of education for girls, featuring famous Bollywood actors like Priyanka Chopra and Freida Pinto. This project became part of the Indian government's campaign to "Save the Daughter, Educate the Daughter."

Her film The Great Artist was created to encourage open conversations about mental health. The film was shortlisted for an Academy Award.
