Ione is a small town located in Pend Oreille County, Washington, in the United States. Its name is pronounced "eye-OWN." In 2020, about 428 people lived there.

Discovering Ione's Past: A Look at Its History
Ione was first settled in 1894 by Elmer Hall. He was a "homesteader," meaning he claimed and settled on land provided by the government. The town officially became a town on January 3, 1910.
Timber Industry: A Big Part of Ione's Story
For nearly 100 years, the timber industry was very important to Ione. In the early 1900s, the Panhandle Lumber Company opened a sawmill here. This was the first sawmill in the inland northwest that ran completely on electricity.
The town's economy relied on timber until 1995. That's when the Vaagen Brothers' sawmill, the last big sawmill in the area, closed down.
The Railroad Arrives in Ione
The railroad came to Ione in 1910. Frederick A. Blackwell built the Idaho & Washington Northern Railroad. This railroad connected Ione to Metaline Falls in the north. It also linked Ione to Newport in the south.
Choosing the County Seat
When Pend Oreille County was created in 1911, Ione was one of four towns hoping to become the "county seat." The county seat is the main town where the county government offices are located. The other towns were Newport, Cusick, and Usk. In 1912, Newport was chosen as the county seat.
Exploring Ione's Location: Geography and Nature
Ione is located on the west side of the Pend Oreille River. This river flows north towards Canada. Several smaller creeks, like Big Muddy Creek, Little Muddy Creek, and Cedar Creek, flow into the river in Ione.
State Route 31 is a main road that goes through the town. The Ione Bridge is on the southern edge of town. It is the only road bridge crossing the Pend Oreille River between Metaline Falls and Usk.
Mountains and Elevation Around Ione
Ione is in the Selkirk Mountains. This means the area around the town has many hills and mountains. The town itself is on a fairly flat area next to the river. It sits about 2,090 feet above sea level.
However, tall mountains rise sharply on both sides of the Pend Oreille River. Cement Mountain is just north of town and reaches 3,003 feet high. Molybdenite Mountain, across the river from Ione, is even taller at 6,788 feet.
