History of Newport
Newport got its name in 1890. It was chosen as the first place where steamboats could land on the Pend Oreille River. This made it an important spot for travel and trade.
The city of Newport officially became a town on April 13, 1903. The first bridge over the river was built in 1906. It was later replaced in 1926 and again in 1988 to make it stronger and safer.
In 1987, Newport started a special project to become the "City of Flags." They planted hundreds of flags from the country, state, and city. This idea was stopped about ten years later because flags were sometimes stolen and it was hard to keep them all in good condition. Today, you won't see any of these flag structures in Newport.
On July 14, 2015, there was an incident at a company called Zodiac Aerospace. Five people were hurt, and everyone nearby was asked to stay far away from the building for safety.
Geography and Location
Newport is located at an elevation of about 2,160 feet (658.5 meters) above sea level. The city covers an area of about 1.07 square miles (2.77 square kilometers), and all of it is land.
Newport's Neighbors and Rivers
The town of Oldtown, Idaho is right next to Newport, just to the east. The two towns are very close, with no natural barriers like mountains or rivers between them. They are only separated by the straight line that marks the state boundary.
The Pend Oreille River flows into Washington state about half a mile north of Newport. From there, it flows north all the way to Canada. The land around the river near Newport is quite flat.
West of the river, the land is a bit lower. Water from natural springs and rainfall in this area flows southwest. This water eventually forms the Little Spokane River, which then flows towards the city of Spokane.
Nearby Lakes and Waterways
Diamond Lake is located about 7 miles (11 kilometers) southwest of Newport. This lake is also part of the Little Spokane River's water system. Water from the far west end of Diamond Lake flows into a creek. This creek then joins the Little Spokane River.
