Iron(III) sulfate facts for kids
Iron(III) sulfate, also known as ferric sulfate, is a special chemical compound. It is made up of iron and sulfate parts. The iron in this compound is in a specific form called the +3 oxidation state, which describes how it combines with other chemicals.

What it Looks Like and Does
Iron(III) sulfate is usually a solid. It can be white, yellow, or even a light purple color. It often forms tiny crystals. When you mix it with water, it dissolves and creates an acidic liquid. It is also a mild 'oxidizing agent,' which means it can cause other chemicals to change by making them lose tiny particles called electrons.
Where it is Found
You can find iron(III) sulfate naturally on Earth. It is often mixed with aluminium sulfate. Sometimes it is found without any water in its structure (this is called anhydrous). Other times, it is found with water molecules attached (these are called hydrated forms).
Interestingly, a lot of iron(III) sulfate has been found on Mars. One of the rovers, which are robots that explore Mars, even got stuck in a patch of iron(III) sulfate!
How it is Made
Scientists and chemists can make iron(III) sulfate in a few ways:
- They can mix sulfuric acid with iron(II) sulfate and an 'oxidizing agent.' Common oxidizing agents used for this are nitric acid or hydrogen peroxide.
- It is also made when iron(III) oxide (which is like rust) reacts with sulfuric acid.
- Another way is when iron(II) sulfate is exposed to oxygen, causing it to change through a process called oxidation.
What it is Used For
Iron(III) sulfate has many helpful uses:
- It is used as a mordant in dyeing. This means it helps dyes stick better to fabrics, making the colors brighter and last longer.
- It helps to coagulate waste. This means it makes tiny particles in dirty water clump together. This helps to remove harmful or unwanted parts from the water.
- It is used in special baths to clean metals.
- It can be used as a pigment, which is a substance that gives color to things like paints.
- In medicine, it is used as an astringent. This means it can help to stop bleeding, for example, on small cuts.
