History of Irvington, Virginia

How Irvington Got Its Name

From 1871 to 1893, Irvington was called "Carter's Creek Wharf." Sometimes people just called it "Carter's Creek." This was because steamboats used to dock there. The creek itself was named after an early settler, John Carter, Sr.. He was the father of a very important person in colonial times, King Carter.

In 1891, the town held a vote to pick a new name. They chose "Irvington" to honor Captain Levin Irvington from Baltimore. This new name also helped stop confusion with mail. Mail often got mixed up with another town called Center Cross in Essex County.
