The Supercoppa Italiana (which means Italian Super Cup) is a yearly football tournament in Italy. It's like a special championship match.
This tournament started in 1988 with two teams. Since 2023, it has grown to include four teams. These teams are the winners and runners-up from Italy's top league, Serie A, and the main cup competition, Coppa Italia. Before 2023, it was just one match between the Serie A champion and the Coppa Italia winner. If one team won both, the Coppa Italia runner-up would play instead.
The Supercoppa Italiana used to be played in the summer. It was often held at the home stadium of the Serie A champions. Since 2018, the competition usually happens in the winter. History of the Supercoppa Italiana
The Supercoppa Italiana began in 1988. For many years, most matches were played at the home stadium of the Serie A champions. However, some games were held in other countries. For example, in 1993 and 2003, the tournament was played in the United States. In 2002, it took place in Tripoli, Libya. Since 2009, many Supercoppa matches have been played outside Italy.
Where the Matches Have Been Played
The Supercoppa final has been played in many different places:
- Twenty times at the home stadium of the Serie A winners.
- Four times in China and four times in Saudi Arabia.
- Twice in the United States.
- Twice in Doha, Qatar.
- Twice at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.
- Once in Tripoli, Libya.
- Once at the Mapei Stadium – Città del Tricolore in Reggio Emilia. This was a neutral place, meaning it wasn't either team's home ground.
Sometimes, a team wins both the Serie A league and the Coppa Italia cup in the same year. When this happens, the team that came second in the Coppa Italia gets to play in the Supercoppa. This has happened eight times since the tournament started. For example, Juventus did this five times. Lazio and Inter Milan also did it.
In 2016, AC Milan made history. They were the first Coppa Italia runners-up to win the Supercoppa Italiana. They beat Juventus in a penalty shootout.
In 2018, Serie A made a deal with Saudi Arabia. This agreement meant that Saudi Arabia would host three of the next five Supercoppa Italiana tournaments.
New Four-Team Format
On March 13, 2023, the Lega Serie A decided to change the Supercoppa Italiana. Starting with the 2023 edition, it became a four-team tournament. The teams are now the winners and runners-up of both the previous season's Serie A and Coppa Italia.
