James Garland Quintel is an American animator, director, writer, producer, and voice actor. He is famous for creating the Cartoon Network series Regular Show (2010–2017). In Regular Show, he also voiced the characters Mordecai and High Five Ghost. He also created the HBO Max series Close Enough (2020–2022), where he voiced the character Josh.

Before creating his own shows, Quintel worked on other popular Cartoon Network series. He was a creative director for The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack (2008–2010). He also worked as a writer and storyboard artist for Camp Lazlo (2006–2008). His work on Flapjack earned him a nomination for an Annie Award in 2009. In 2011, Regular Show was nominated for an Emmy Award.

The Early Life of J. G. Quintel

James Garland Quintel was born in Hanford, California. He grew up in a flat area where there wasn't much to do. This led him and his friends to find creative ways to have fun. These adventures later inspired many of the stories in Regular Show.

Quintel enjoyed playing the video game ToeJam & Earl. He said this game was a "perfect platform" for the main characters of Regular Show, Mordecai and Rigby. He also loved rock music from the 1980s, which he later included in his show. He went to Hanford High School.

How He Started Making Films

When Quintel was 16, his dad gave him a video camera. He used it to make short stop motion films with Lego men and paper cutouts. To improve his skills, he took an AP literature class and a pottery class. He also attended a summer class where he learned about animation and how to make flip books. Like Mordecai and Rigby in Regular Show, he worked many minimum wage jobs, including at a movie theater.

College and Animation Training

After high school, Quintel attended College of the Sequoias and College of the Canyons. He then transferred to California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in Santa Clarita, California. At CalArts, he and other students, like voice artist Sam Marin, would create short films very quickly. They would pick a word from a hat and then try to make a film based on that word in just 48 hours.

In 2005, this process led Quintel to create a short animated film called The Naive Man from Lolliland. This film was about an ambassador who gets upset during a simple meeting. In 2004, Quintel also had an internship at Cartoon Network Studios. He worked on the TV series Star Wars: Clone Wars. At CalArts, he met Pendleton Ward, who later created the popular Cartoon Network series Adventure Time.

Awards for Early Work

In 2005, The Naive Man from Lolliland won two awards at the 2005 Nextoons Nicktoons Film Festival. He won the Producers Choice Award and the Student Animator Award. Fred Seibert, a well-known producer, called Quintel "an original talent to watch out for." In December 2005, Quintel earned his BFA degree in character animation from CalArts.

J. G. Quintel's Career in Animation

After college, Quintel started working as a storyboard revisionist for Cartoon Network's Camp Lazlo. In 2006, he was a judge at the 3rd Annual Nicktoons Network Animation Festival. In 2007, he showed his short film, 2 in the AM PM, at a festival. This film was about two slackers working at a convenience store on Halloween. Some of these characters later appeared in Regular Show.

Creating Regular Show

In 2008, Quintel presented his idea for Regular Show to Cartoon Network. He used a storyboard to show his idea because he felt it was too "odd" to explain with just words. In 2009, Cartoon Network approved Regular Show. The show was about two park groundskeepers, Mordecai (a blue jay) and Rigby (a raccoon). They try to make their boring jobs fun and often get into strange adventures.

Regular Show first aired on September 6, 2010. In September 2011, Quintel was nominated for an Primetime Emmy Award as the executive producer and creator of Regular Show. The show became very popular.

Working on Regular Show

By 2012, Quintel was leading a team of about 35 people to create each episode of Regular Show. It took about nine months to make an episode from start to finish. Quintel also voiced Mordecai, the 23-year-old blue jay character. He mentioned that he had to learn how to yell as Mordecai because he is usually very calm in real life.

After Regular Show

After Regular Show ended in January 2017, Quintel announced a new show called Close Enough. This was an animated series for adults about a young couple and their daughter living in Los Angeles. The show was first planned for TBS, but it later moved to HBO Max (now Max). It premiered in 2020 and ran until 2022.

In June 2024, Warner Bros. Discovery announced that a new Regular Show series is coming. Quintel will return as the showrunner, meaning he will be in charge of the new series. It was also announced that he will be the showrunner for an adult TV show based on the webcomic SuperMutant Magic Academy for Adult Swim.
