Early Life and Creative Spark
James Garland Quintel was born in Hanford, California. He grew up in a flat area where there wasn't a lot to do. This led him and his friends to find creative ways to entertain themselves. These fun, often silly, adventures later inspired many of the stories in Regular Show.
School Projects and Inspiration
As a teenager, Quintel loved drawing and watching cartoons. Some of his favorites were The Simpsons, Beavis and Butt-Head, and Rocko's Modern Life. He was also inspired by British comedy shows like The Mighty Boosh.
He enjoyed playing the video game ToeJam & Earl. He later said this game was a "perfect platform" for the main characters of Regular Show, Mordecai and Rigby. He also loved 1980s rock music, which he later added to Regular Show.
When he was 16, his dad gave him a video camera. He used it to make short stop-motion films for school, using Lego men and paper cutouts. He also took classes to learn about animation and how to make flip books. Like Mordecai and Rigby in Regular Show, he worked many minimum wage jobs, including at a movie theater.
College Days and First Success
After high school, Quintel went to the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). There, he and other students would create short films very quickly. They would draw a word from a hat, then rush to make a film based on that word in just 48 hours.
In 2005, this process led Quintel to create a short animated film called The Naive Man from Lolliland. This film won two awards at the 2005 Nextoons Nicktoons Film Festival. This success helped him get noticed in the animation world. He also had an internship at Cartoon Network Studios in 2004, working on Star Wars: Clone Wars. At CalArts, he met Pendleton Ward, who later created Adventure Time.
Building an Animation Career
After graduating from CalArts in 2005, Quintel started working at Cartoon Network. He began as a storyboard revisionist for the show Camp Lazlo. A storyboard artist draws pictures to plan out how a cartoon episode will look, scene by scene.
In 2007, he made another short film called 2 in the AM PM. This film was about two lazy workers at a convenience store on Halloween night. Some of the characters from this short film later appeared in Regular Show.
Creating Regular Show
In 2008, Quintel pitched his idea for Regular Show to Cartoon Network. Instead of just talking about it, he used a storyboard to show his idea. He felt that his "odd concept" would make more sense if people could see it.
Cartoon Network liked his idea, and Regular Show was given the green light in 2009. The show is about two park groundskeepers, Mordecai (a blue jay) and Rigby (a raccoon). They try to make their boring jobs fun and often get into strange, wild adventures.
Regular Show first aired on September 6, 2010. Quintel was the executive producer and creator of the show. He also voiced Mordecai, the blue jay, and High Five Ghost. He said that since he's usually a calm person, he had to learn how to yell for the character of Mordecai!
Beyond Regular Show
Regular Show ended in January 2017. After that, Quintel announced a new animated series called Close Enough. This show is for older audiences and is about a young couple and their daughter living in Los Angeles. It premiered in 2020.
In June 2024, it was announced that Regular Show would be getting a new series, with Quintel returning as the showrunner. He will also be the showrunner for an adult TV show based on a webcomic called SuperMutant Magic Academy.
Personal Life
J. G. Quintel married Cassia Streb in 2010.
