Jysk A/S (pronounced YUHSK) is a popular store chain from Denmark. It sells items for the home, like mattresses, furniture, and decorations. It is Denmark's biggest retail company that operates in other countries.
Jysk has more than 3,400 stores in 48 different countries. The name "Jysk" means something or someone from Jutland, a large peninsula in Denmark. This name shows the company's Danish roots.
The company was started by Lars Larsen. He opened the very first store in the city of Aarhus, Denmark, in April 1979. Today, Jysk is owned by Lars Larsen's family through a company called the Lars Larsen Group. This group also owns other furniture stores. Because of its simple, modern style, Jysk is sometimes called a smaller version of the Swedish store IKEA.

History of Jysk
The Early Years (1979–1989)
The first Jysk store opened on April 2, 1979, in Aarhus, Denmark. That original store is still open today.
In 1984, Jysk began to open stores outside of Denmark. The first one was in Germany. In the same year, the first Jysk franchise store opened in Greenland. A franchise is a store that is allowed to use the company's name and sell its products but is run by a different owner.
The company continued to grow. It opened a store in the Faroe Islands in 1986 and in Iceland in 1987. A year later, in 1988, Jysk opened its first store in Norway.
Growing Bigger (1990–1999)
During the 1990s, Jysk expanded even more. It opened its first store in Finland in 1995. The next year, it crossed the Atlantic Ocean to open a store in Coquitlam, Canada. By 1998, Jysk celebrated a big milestone: opening its 500th store.
A New Century (2000–2009)
In 2000, Jysk opened its first store in Poland. A year later, the company decided to simplify its name. In many countries, the stores were just called "Jysk."
Jysk continued to open stores in new countries, including Hungary in 2004. In 2008, the company opened a huge warehouse in Uldum, Denmark. It was the largest in Northern Europe at the time. That same year, Jysk opened its first stores in the United Kingdom.
Global Expansion (2010–2019)
In 2010, Jysk received a special honor. It was named an official supplier to the Queen of Denmark. This is called a royal warrant of appointment.
The company kept growing around the world. It opened stores in Armenia in 2013, Indonesia in 2014, and Singapore in 2016. In the following years, Jysk opened shops in Belarus, Tajikistan, Georgia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Thailand, and Azerbaijan.
In 2019, Jysk opened its first store in the Republic of Ireland. The company's founder, Lars Larsen, passed away on August 19, 2019. Later that year, all the different parts of the Jysk company officially merged into one big business, with all stores using the Jysk name.
Jysk Stores Around the World
Jysk stores are usually medium-sized, with an average space of about 1,300 m2 (14,000 sq ft). The company operates in two main ways: through stores it owns directly and through franchise stores.
Most stores, over 3,000 of them, are in countries in Scandinavia, Central and Eastern Europe, Germany, Austria, and other parts of Western Europe. Germany is Jysk's biggest market, with the most stores.
Franchise stores operate in more than 20 countries, including Canada, the United Arab Emirates, Thailand, and Vietnam.
