Jacobite consorts facts for kids
Jacobite consorts were people married to a Jacobite pretender. A pretender was someone who claimed to be the rightful king or queen of England, Scotland, and Ireland. This happened after King James II left the throne in 1688. If the consort was a woman, Jacobites saw her as the true Queen Consort.
Since 1983, there has not been a Jacobite consort. The current person who could be a pretender, Franz, Duke of Bavaria, is not married. After 1807, the claim to the throne moved away from the House of Stuart family. None of the later Jacobite heirs have actually claimed the thrones. They also did not use the symbols of England and Scotland in their family crests.

VACANT |
Henry Benedict Stuart (who was a pretender from 1788 to 1807, known as Henry IX & I) never married. He was a Catholic priest, bishop, and cardinal. Franz, Duke of Bavaria (the current pretender since 1996, known as Francis II) is also not married.
Some wives died before their husbands became pretenders. This includes Marie Clotilde of France, who was married to Charles Emmanuel IV of Sardinia (pretender from 1807 to 1819, as Charles IV). The same happened with Duchess Marie Gabrielle in Bavaria, the first wife of Rupprecht, Crown Prince of Bavaria (Robert I & IV).
