The Carolina Panthers chose James Bradberry in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He was the 62nd player picked overall. He signed a four-year contract with the team.
Bradberry quickly earned a starting spot as a cornerback. He played his first professional game against the Denver Broncos, making six tackles. In his second game, he made his first career interception against the San Francisco 49ers.
Later in the season, Bradberry became the Panthers' top cornerback. He missed some games due to a foot injury. But he finished his first year with 59 tackles, ten pass deflections, and two interceptions. He was considered one of the best rookie cornerbacks.
