James Richard Gammon (born April 20, 1940 – died July 16, 2010) was an American actor. He was known for playing tough, friendly characters, often called "good ol' boy" types, in many movies and TV shows.
James Gammon played Lou Brown, the manager of the Cleveland Indians baseball team, in the popular movies Major League and Major League II. He was also well-known for his role as Nick Bridges, a retired longshoreman and father of the main character, in the TV crime show Nash Bridges.

About James Gammon
His Early Life
James Gammon was born in Newman, Illinois. His mother, Doris, was a farm girl, and his father, Donald, was a musician. After his parents separated, James moved to Orlando, Florida.
In Orlando, he worked at a TV station called WLOF-TV (Channel 9). He was a cameraman and director there. When he was in his 20s, he decided to move to Hollywood to try and find acting jobs.
His Acting Career
In the 1970s, James Gammon helped start a theater group in Los Angeles called the Met Theatre. While acting there, someone from The Public Theater saw him. This led to him being cast in a play called Curse of the Starving Class in 1978. He became good friends with the play's writer, Sam Shepard.
James Gammon appeared on Broadway, which is a famous theater district in New York City. He played the character "Dodge" in a play called Buried Child. He was even nominated for a Tony Award for his amazing performance!
Famous Roles in Movies and TV
Many people remember James Gammon for his role as Lou Brown, the manager of the Cleveland Indians in the Major League movies. He was also famous for playing Nick Bridges, the father of Don Johnson's character, in the TV series Nash Bridges.
He acted in many other well-known films, including Cool Hand Luke (1967), Urban Cowboy (1980), Silverado (1985), and The Milagro Beanfield War (1988). Later in his career, he appeared in Cold Mountain (2003) and Appaloosa (2008).
On television, James Gammon played a veteran from the Korean War in the popular show Grey's Anatomy. He also voiced animated characters like Marv Loach and Floyd Turbeaux in the 1999 movie The Iron Giant.

James Gammon was married to Nancy Jane Kapusta from 1972 until he passed away. He had two daughters named Allison Mann and Amy Gammon. He also had a brother, Philip, and a sister, Sandra.
His Death
James Gammon passed away on July 16, 2010, in Costa Mesa, California. He was 70 years old and died from cancer.
