General Jinjur is a character from the famous Oz books. These stories were written by L. Frank Baum and other authors. She first appears in The Marvelous Land of Oz as a leader who causes some trouble.

Jinjur's Story

The Army of Revolt

General Jinjur first appears in the book The Marvelous Land of Oz. She names herself a general and leads an "Army of Revolt." This army is made up only of women. Their main goal is to end the rule of the Scarecrow. They want to take over the beautiful Emerald City.

The story of Jinjur's army makes fun of a real-life movement. At that time, many women wanted the right to vote. This was called women's suffrage. L. Frank Baum, the author, actually supported this idea. Jinjur's followers use sharp knitting needles to fight. They also use their charm. Jinjur even says, "there is not an ugly face in my entire Army." This is because men might not want to hurt a pretty girl.

However, a group of mice scares Jinjur's young women away for a short time. When Jinjur's army takes over, they make the men of the Emerald City do all the housework. This includes cooking and cleaning. The men quickly get tired. Soon, their wives are happy to take back these chores. They do them much better!

Jinjur's Personality

Jinjur's name sounds like "ginger." This hints that she can be a bit fiery. But she is not truly evil, just a little misguided. She is also quite easily scared. For example, she dances on the throne when she sees the field mice.

Even though she works with the witch Mombi, Jinjur is secretly afraid of her. After she loses the throne, Jinjur quickly promises to be loyal to Princess Ozma. This happens after Glinda and her army defeat Jinjur. Glinda's army is also made up only of female soldiers.

Later Adventures

In Ozma of Oz, Jinjur appears briefly. She is now a dairy farmer's wife. She says she is happy with her new life. She also mentions that her husband got a black eye from milking the wrong cow!

The book The Patchwork Girl of Oz tells us more about Jinjur. It says she is a very good painter. She even helps to fix her old rival, the Scarecrow.

Jinjur has a bigger role in The Tin Woodman of Oz. She still lives on a farm in the Munchkin Country. Her husband is not around in this story. She is surprised when the Tin Woodman, the Scarecrow, and their friends arrive. These friends have been turned into animals by a sorceress named Mrs. Yoop. Once Jinjur understands what happened, she calms down. She becomes very helpful and friendly to them.

How Jinjur Looks

Her Military Style

In The Marvelous Land of Oz, Jinjur is shown wearing a special military uniform. It's a feminine version of uniforms from before World War I. She wears a skirt instead of pants. She also has tall boots, a military-style jacket, and a tall hat called a shako. Her army wears similar uniforms. They look like a well-trained group or a dance line.

As a Dairy Maid

In Ozma of Oz, Jinjur is described as a pretty dairy maid. Princess Ozma has to look very closely to recognize her. This shows how much Jinjur has changed from her days as a general.

Jinjur in Other Stories

Comic Books and Novels

In the comic book series Oz, Jinjur is part of Oz's Freedom Fighters. In one issue, it is revealed that her husband was turned into a jewel by Ruggedo.

In Gregory Maguire's fourth Oz novel, Out of Oz, there is a character named "General Jinjuria." She leads the armies of Munchkin Country. This character seems to be a nod to General Jinjur.
