Playing Career Highlights
Time at Ajax
John Heitinga started his football journey in the Ajax youth team. He made his first team debut on 26 August 2001 against Feyenoord. He was part of a talented group of young players at Ajax, including Rafael van der Vaart and Wesley Sneijder.
He quickly became an important player for the team. However, he faced challenges when he suffered two serious knee injuries. These injuries kept him out of the game for a long time.
Heitinga made a strong comeback at the start of the 2003–04 season. He became a key central defender and a fan favorite. When he announced he would leave Ajax in 2008, fans showed their appreciation with a special display in the stands.
Playing for Atlético Madrid
After leaving Ajax, Heitinga moved to Atlético Madrid in Spain in 2008. He played for one season, making 32 appearances and scoring three goals.
Years at Everton
In September 2009, Heitinga joined the English club Everton. He signed a five-year contract. He couldn't play for Everton in the UEFA Europa League because he had already played for Atlético Madrid in another European competition.

In the 2010–11 FA Cup, Heitinga scored a penalty in a shootout against Chelsea, helping Everton win. Later that season, he scored his first goal for Everton. Fans voted him Everton's Player of the Season for 2011–12. He played very well as a centre back during this time.
The 2012–13 season was tougher for Heitinga. He didn't play as much because other defenders were preferred. Despite this, his manager praised his mental strength. Heitinga decided not to sign a new contract with Everton. He left the club in January 2014, joining Fulham for free.

On 27 January 2023, Heitinga was appointed as the interim manager for Ajax's first team. This happened after the previous manager was dismissed. His first game in charge was a 4–1 win. Under his leadership, Ajax finished third in the league and reached the final of the KNVB Cup. However, he did not continue as the main manager after his interim period.
In September 2023, Heitinga became a first-team coach at West Ham United. He worked as an assistant to David Moyes, who was his former manager at Everton. When Moyes left West Ham in May 2024, Heitinga also left the club. On 17 July 2024, he was appointed as the new assistant coach at Liverpool.
