A Glimpse into Joigny's Past
Joigny has a long and interesting history! It was first started way back in Roman times, around the year 369 AD. Back then, it was known by its Latin name, Joviniacum.
Medieval Stronghold
During the Middle Ages, Joigny became a strong, fortified town. This happened around the end of the 10th century. A count named Renard I built defenses here. One cool part of the old castle that you can still see today is the Porte du Bois. It's a big gateway with two huge towers on either side.
Resisting the English
Over the centuries, Joigny was owned by different families. In 1429, the town bravely defended itself against the English army. A small piece of a ladder, kept in the church of St André, reminds everyone of this successful defense.
Who Lives in Joigny?
Joigny is home to about 9,200 people as of 2021. The number of people living here has changed a bit over the years. For example, in 1975, there were over 10,000 residents.

St André Church
The church of St André was built over many centuries, from the 12th to the 17th. Its most impressive part is the Renaissance entrance. It has beautiful bas-reliefs, which are sculptures that stick out from a flat surface.
