Josephus Antonius van Kemenade (born March 6, 1937 – died February 19, 2020) was a Dutch politician and a sociologist. He was a member of the Labour Party (PvdA). In 2002, he received the special honorary title of Minister of State. This title is given to people who have served the country in important ways.

Jos van Kemenade's Career
Early Life and Education
Jos van Kemenade was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He went to a special high school called a Gymnasium in Amsterdam. After that, he studied Sociology at Radboud University Nijmegen. He earned several degrees, including a Bachelor's, a Master's, and a PhD in Sociology. He also worked as a researcher and later became a professor of Pedagogy (the study of teaching) at the same university.
Becoming a Minister
In 1973, Jos van Kemenade became the Minister of Education and Sciences. This meant he was in charge of schools and scientific research for the whole country. He served in this role until 1977.
He was also elected as a Member of the House of Representatives, which is like being a member of parliament. However, in the Netherlands, you usually can't be a minister and a member of parliament at the same time. So, he resigned from parliament to focus on his minister job.
He became Minister of Education and Sciences again in 1981, serving for about seven months.
Later Political Roles
After his time as a minister, Jos van Kemenade returned to parliament in 1982. He led important committees on education and science. He also taught as a professor at the University of Amsterdam and the University of Groningen.
In 1984, he became the President of the University Council at the University of Amsterdam. This meant he helped lead the university.
In 1988, he became the Mayor of Eindhoven, a big city in the Netherlands. He was responsible for leading the city government.
From 1992 to 2002, he served as the Queen's Commissioner of North Holland. This is a special role where he represented the Queen in the province of North Holland. He helped manage the province and worked with local governments.
Other Contributions
Jos van Kemenade was also involved in many other important organizations. He was a director on boards for groups like the Organisation for Scientific Research and the Anne Frank Foundation. He also wrote many books about politics and education.
He was known for being a "consensus builder", meaning he was good at bringing people together to agree. He was also called a "policy wonk," which means he was very knowledgeable about how government policies work.
Jos van Kemenade passed away on February 19, 2020. He continued to share his ideas about politics even after he retired.
