Josh James Brolin (born February 12, 1968) is an American actor. He is the son of actor James Brolin. Josh first became famous when he was young for his role in the adventure movie The Goonies (1985).

After some years, Brolin became very popular again. This happened with his main role in the crime film No Country for Old Men (2007). He was even nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for playing Dan White in the movie Milk (2008).

Brolin has starred in many other well-known films. These include True Grit (2010), Men in Black 3 (2012), and Everest (2015). He is widely known for playing the supervillain Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies. These include Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). He also played Cable in Deadpool 2 (2018). More recently, Brolin has worked with director Denis Villeneuve in the science fiction films Dune (2021) and Dune: Part Two (2024), where he plays Gurney Halleck.

Early Life and Family

Josh Brolin was born on February 12, 1968, in Santa Monica, California. His mother was Jane Cameron (Agee), a wildlife activist. His father was the actor James Brolin.

Josh grew up on a ranch in Templeton, California. He did not see much of his father's acting career during his childhood. His parents divorced in 1984, when he was 16 years old.

Acting Career

Early Roles and First Big Break (1980s)

Josh Brolin started his acting career in TV movies. He also had small guest roles on TV shows. His first big role was as Brandon Walsh in the movie The Goonies (1985). This film was directed by Richard Donner.

Brolin was considered for a role in the TV series 21 Jump Street. He and Johnny Depp were the final choices for the part. They became good friends. Johnny Depp eventually got the role. However, Brolin did appear as a guest star in one episode of the show's first season.

Taking a Break from Film (1990–2006)

After his early success, Brolin took a break from acting in movies for several years. He appeared in stage plays in Rochester, New York. During this time, he often worked with his mentor and friend Anthony Zerbe.

One of Brolin's important early roles was as "Wild Bill" Hickok. He played this character in the ABC western TV series The Young Riders. This show ran for three seasons, from 1989 to 1992. Brolin also appeared in two other TV series, Winnetka Road (1994) and Mister Sterling (2003). Both of these shows were cancelled after only a few episodes.

Return to Stardom (2006–2016)

By 2006, Josh Brolin was trading stocks full-time. Then, he got the main role in the Coen brothers' film No Country for Old Men (2007). This movie won an Academy Award and was very successful with both critics and audiences. Brolin then got a part in the successful Ridley Scott film American Gangster (2007).

In 2008, Brolin starred in the Oliver Stone film W.. This was a biopic about important events in the life of George W. Bush. Brolin was at first unsure about taking the role, but director Oliver Stone convinced him.

Also in 2008, Brolin received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. This was for his role in Gus Van Sant's biopic Milk. He played city supervisor Dan White, who assassinated San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone. Brolin received great praise for his acting in this film. He also won awards from the NYFCC and NBR for Best Supporting Actor.

Brolin has hosted Saturday Night Live three times. He hosted in 2008, 2012, and 2024.

In 2009, Brolin helped produce and performed in The People Speak. This was a documentary film that used dramatic and musical performances. It was based on historian Howard Zinn's book A People's History of the United States. The next year, Brolin wrote and directed a short film called X. This was his first time directing.

In the early 2010s, Brolin appeared in many big-budget movies. He played the main character in Jonah Hex (2010). This movie was based on the DC Comics character. Brolin also appeared in the Coen Brother film True Grit (2010). He was also in Oliver Stone's Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (2010).

In 2012, Brolin played a younger version of Tommy Lee Jones's character, Kevin Brown / Agent K, in Men in Black 3. Brolin and Jones had worked together before in No Country for Old Men. In 2013, Brolin starred in Gangster Squad. He played a fictional World War II veteran named John O'Mara. Later that year, Brolin played Joe Doucett in Oldboy. This was a remake of a 2003 South Korean film.

In 2014, it was announced that Brolin would play Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He plays the character using motion capture technology and voice acting. Brolin made cameo appearances as Thanos in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015).

Global Recognition: Marvel and Dune Roles (2016–Present)

Brolin played Thanos again in a starring role in Avengers: Infinity War (2018). He also appeared in Avengers: Endgame (2019). Both movies were filmed one after the other. His performance as Thanos was highly praised by critics.

In April 2017, Brolin signed a contract to play the Marvel Comics character Nathan Summers / Cable. This was for the X-Men film series. Deadpool 2 (2018) was his first movie as Cable. He was set to play Cable again in a planned X-Force movie. However, this changed when Disney bought 20th Century Fox studios.

In February 2019, Brolin joined the cast of Denis Villeneuve's Dune. He played the character Gurney Halleck. In 2021, Brolin also voiced an alternate version of Thanos in the What If...? TV series. Dune was released in October of that year and received very good reviews.

In April 2022, Brolin starred as Royal Abbot in the Amazon Prime Video series Outer Range. He also works as an executive producer for the show.

In March 2024, Dune: Part Two was released and received excellent reviews. The second season of Outer Range came out on May 16, 2024. Brolin returned to his role and also directed one episode. On June 3, 2024, it was announced that Brolin had joined the cast of Rian Johnson's Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.

Josh Brolin was married to actress Alice Adair from 1988 to 1994. They have two children together, including Eden. He was also engaged to actress Minnie Driver for six months.

Brolin married actress Diane Lane on August 15, 2004. They divorced in 2013.

In March 2013, Brolin started dating Kathryn Boyd, who was his former assistant and a model. They got engaged in March 2015. The couple married on September 24, 2016. On May 29, 2018, they announced they were expecting their first child together. Brolin shared on Instagram on November 4, 2018, that Boyd had given birth to a daughter. Their second daughter was born on December 25, 2020.

Other Interests

In his mid-20s, Josh Brolin started trading stocks. He even thought about quitting acting for a while. He explained that he made a lot of money over a three-year period by trading stocks. He was also a co-founder of a stock trading website, which is no longer active.
