Joshua Lucas Easy Dent Maurer was born on June 20, 1971. His birthplace was Little Rock, Arkansas, in the United States. His mother, Michele, was a nurse who helped deliver babies. His father, Don, was a doctor who worked in emergency rooms. Josh has three younger brothers and sisters.
As a child, Josh Lucas moved around a lot with his family. His parents were activists who worked for peace and against nuclear weapons. By the time he was 13, Josh had lived in 30 different places. These included islands in South Carolina. His family eventually settled in Gig Harbor, Washington. He went to Kopachuck Middle School. He graduated from Gig Harbor High School in 1989. While in high school, he enjoyed acting in school plays.
Acting Career
Josh Lucas started his acting career when he was 19 years old. He moved to Hollywood right after finishing high school. In his early 20s, he appeared as a guest star on several TV shows. These included True Colors and Parker Lewis Can't Lose. He also appeared in Life Goes On.
Early Roles and First Movies
One of his early projects was a TV movie called Child of Darkness, Child of Light. He then worked with famous producer Steven Spielberg in the TV movie Class of '61. This movie was about a group of cadets during the start of the American Civil War. Josh Lucas played the role of George Armstrong Custer.
Soon after, he made his first movie appearance in Alive. This film told the story of Uruguayan rugby players. They crashed in the Andes mountains and had to survive. After a small role in Father Hood, Lucas moved to Australia. There, he played Luke McGregor in the TV series Snowy River: The McGregor Saga. He was in 13 episodes of the first season.
Moving to New York and New Roles
When he returned to the United States, Josh felt he was still getting roles as young boyfriends. He wanted more grown-up parts. An actor named George C. Scott advised him to take acting lessons. So, Lucas moved to New York City. He studied acting there with different teachers.

Lucas became more widely known after his roles in popular movies. These included Sweet Home Alabama and A Beautiful Mind. He also played Glenn Talbot in the movie Hulk.
He later took on main roles in films like Glory Road, Poseidon, and Stealth. For his role as basketball coach Don Haskins in Glory Road, he gained 40 pounds.
In 2011, Lucas starred with Rachael Taylor in the movie Red Dog. This film was based on the true story of an Australian dog. He won an award for his acting in this movie. He also starred in the NBC TV show The Firm. This show was based on a famous novel.

Personal Life
Josh Lucas met author Jessica Ciencin Henriquez in 2011. They got engaged six weeks later. They married on March 17, 2012, in Central Park. Their son, Noah Rev, was born in June 2012. They divorced in October 2014.
In 2022, Lucas met meteorologist Brianna Ruffalo. They became engaged in June 2024.
Political Involvement
Josh Lucas supported US President Barack Obama during the 2008 presidential election. He volunteered to help people register to vote in colleges in Pennsylvania. He also knocked on doors and made phone calls to voters. He wore an Obama shirt for 45 days. He also attended the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado. He was there with a group of actors called the Creative Coalition.
