Joshua Buatsi (born March 14, 1993) is a professional boxer from Britain. He was the temporary (interim) light-heavyweight champion for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) from 2024 to February 2025. He also held the British light-heavyweight title twice. In 2024, he won the Commonwealth light-heavyweight title. As an amateur boxer, he earned a bronze medal at the 2015 European Championships and at the 2016 Olympic Games.

About Joshua Buatsi
Joshua Buatsi was born in Accra, Ghana, on March 14, 1993. His family later moved to the UK and settled in South London. Joshua went to Edenham High School. He also studied at St Mary's University, Twickenham. He earned a degree in Management with Sports Science. He managed to do this while also training as an amateur boxer.
Amateur Boxing Career
Joshua started his boxing journey at the South Norwood and Victory club in London. His first trainer, Terry Smith, worked with him for a long time. Another coach, Mark Gillespie, also helped Joshua as he became a professional boxer.
Olympic Qualification
In 2016, Joshua competed in a special tournament in Turkey. This event helped boxers qualify for the Olympics. He won against Oleksandr Khyzhniak from Ukraine. Then, he beat Peter Müllenberg from the Netherlands. These wins secured his spot on the Great Britain team for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
2016 Olympic Games
At the 2016 Summer Olympics, Joshua competed in the men's light-heavyweight division. He won his first fight against Elshod Rasulov from Uzbekistan. Joshua won by a knockout in the third round. This victory helped him move forward to the quarter-finals. He eventually won a bronze medal at the Olympics.
Professional Boxing Career
Joshua Buatsi began his professional boxing career on July 1, 2017. His first fight was against Carlos Mena at The O2 Arena. Joshua won this fight by knockout in the second round. He continued to win his early fights, often by knockout.
Winning Titles
On March 23, 2019, Joshua fought Liam Conroy. He won this fight by technical knockout in the third round. This victory made him the new British light-heavyweight champion. The fight took place at the Copper Box Arena in London.
Joshua then made his debut in the United States. He fought Marco Antonio Peribán in New York City. Joshua knocked Peribán down and then continued to land punches. The referee stopped the fight, giving Joshua another win.
He later faced Ryan Ford, a tough Canadian boxer. Joshua won this fight in the seventh round. On May 15, 2021, Joshua fought Daniel Dos Santos. He won by a powerful knockout in the fourth round. He also beat Ričards Bolotņiks by knockout in the eleventh round. For these fights, Joshua trained with Virgil Hunter in California.
British and Commonwealth Titles
On February 3, 2024, Joshua fought Dan Azeez at Wembley Arena. He won this fight by a unanimous decision. This win earned him both the British and Commonwealth light-heavyweight titles.
WBO Interim Title
Joshua became the WBO interim light-heavyweight champion on September 21, 2024. He won against Willy Hutchinson at Wembley Stadium. Joshua knocked Hutchinson down twice during the fight. Two judges scored the fight in his favor.
First Professional Loss
On February 22, 2025, Joshua Buatsi faced Callum Smith in Saudi Arabia. Joshua lost this fight by a unanimous decision. This was his first loss as a professional boxer. He also lost his WBO interim light-heavyweight title.
Outside the Boxing Ring
Joshua Buatsi is managed by Anthony Joshua, who is a two-time world heavyweight boxing champion. Joshua Buatsi also supports an organization called BoxWise. This group helps young people through boxing. It is a non-profit social enterprise based in the UK.
