Juvigny-sur-Seulles is a small village in France. It is located in the northwest part of the country. You can find it in the region called Basse-Normandie. This village is part of the Calvados department.

History of Juvigny-sur-Seulles

The village of Juvigny-sur-Seulles has a long history. It existed even before the big changes of the French Revolution. Back then, it was simply known as Juvigny. The name was officially changed to Juvigny-sur-Seulles in 1938. The new name includes "sur-Seulles" because of the Seulles River that flows nearby.

Where is Juvigny-sur-Seulles?

Juvigny-sur-Seulles is located in a very interesting area. It is only a few kilometers away from the famous D-Day landing beaches. These beaches were very important during World War II. The village is also close to two larger cities: Caen and Bayeux.

The Old Bridge of Juvigny-sur-Seulles

  • The old bridge crosses the river Seulles.
  • It is a very special building in France. It has been a listed building (Monument Historique) since 2006.
  • This bridge dates back to the Middle Ages. It is made of stone and has five arches.
  • It is one of the oldest bridges of its kind in the Calvados department.
  • In the past, pilgrims used this bridge. They walked over it to reach the famous Mont-Saint-Michel.
  • Many businesses grew around the bridge. These included inns, a cabaret, a bakery, and a blacksmith.
  • In the 18th century, more people used the bridge. This was because of the trade of lime.
  • Later, in 1850, the people of Juvigny-sur-Seulles built a more modern bridge.
