Kamen Tchanev (born August 27, 1964 – died November 26, 2020) was a famous opera singer from Bulgaria. He was a tenor, which means he sang high notes in opera. He performed in many opera houses around the world.
Early Life and Music Training
Kamen Tchanev was born in a town called Sliven in Bulgaria. He went to a French language school there. In 1991, he finished his studies at the Bulgarian State Music Academy. The next year, he studied even more at the Boris Hristov Academy of Music and Arts in Rome, Italy.
During his training, he worked with very famous singers like Alexandrina Miltcheva and Ghena Dimitrova. He also learned from Leone Magiera, who was the pianist for the legendary singer Luciano Pavarotti. In 1994, Kamen won an award at the Jussi Björling international competition for tenors. This showed he was a very talented singer.
His Amazing Opera Career
Kamen Tchanev started his professional career in 1993 at the Sofia National Opera in Bulgaria. His first big role was playing the Duke of Mantua in Verdi's opera Rigoletto. After five years, he moved to Prague in the Czech Republic. He sang there for two years.
Later, he became a "freelancer," which means he worked for himself and performed in many different places. He was often invited back to sing at the Prague State Opera. Kamen sang in many countries, including Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, and the USA.
At the start of his career, Kamen sang "lyric" roles. These roles are often for characters who are young and romantic. Some of these roles included Faust in Gounod's Faust and Alfredo in Verdi's La traviata. As he got older, he started singing more "dramatic" roles. These roles are often for stronger, more powerful characters. Examples include Cavaradossi in Puccini's Tosca and Radames in Verdi's Aida.
Kamen worked with many famous conductors, who are the leaders of the orchestra. Some of them were Riccardo Muti and Lorin Maazel. He also made recordings for Bulgarian National Radio and RAI-2 in Italy. In 1999, he recorded a CD of opera songs with the Plovdiv Philharmonic Orchestra.
Sadly, Kamen Tchanev's career ended when he passed away from COVID-19 at the age of 56. This happened just three weeks after he sang the very challenging role of Otello for the first time.
