Karen X. Gaylord (born January 4, 1921 – died August 1, 2014) was an American actress and model. She was also a former Miss Minnesota. Karen was most famous for her work in the 1940s.
Early Life and Dreams
Karen Xandra Gaylord was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on January 4, 1921. She grew up in a working class family. Karen was the oldest of four sisters. Her father worked as an engineer for the Northern Pacific Railway.
After finishing North Community High School in 1939, Karen wanted to go to college. She dreamed of studying music and art.
One day, a friend saw an ad in Movie Mirror magazine. It said that movie studios in California were looking for new actors. They asked people to send in their photos. Without telling Karen, her friend sent in Karen's picture. Soon after, Karen received a letter. It invited her to California for a tryout!
The whole Gaylord family thought this was a great chance. So, they all moved to California with Karen.
Becoming a Star
Once in California, Karen started visiting major studios in Hollywood. She did screen tests and wardrobe tests. These tests showed how she looked and acted on camera and in different costumes.
In 1941, Karen Gaylord was in her first film, The Chocolate Soldier. She was not listed in the movie's credits. Between 1941 and 1949, she acted in about 36 films. But she was only named in the credits once. This was for the 1944 film Cover Girl, which starred Rita Hayworth.
In 1942, the Chamber of Commerce in Minneapolis chose Karen as 'Miss Minnesota.' After this, film producer Samuel Goldwyn picked Karen. She became one of his six new Goldwyn Girls. The Goldwyn Girls were a group of talented female dancers. Some very famous women were part of this group.
Karen also became a popular stand-in. A stand-in is someone who takes an actor's place when the main actor is not there. Karen stood in for leading ladies like Linda Darnell, Barbara Stanwyck, and Gene Tierney.
Life After Hollywood
In 1949, Karen Gaylord left the entertainment world. She moved to Clearwater, Florida. There, she started living her dream of teaching music and art. In 1950, she officially changed her name to Jane Goerner.
She taught private music and art lessons from her home. She continued teaching until the 1990s.
In her later years, Karen had some health issues. She sold her home and moved to Ocala, Florida. She lived there with her sister and brother-in-law. Karen died peacefully in her sleep on August 1, 2014, at age 93. There were no funeral services. Her body was given to medical science. This was done through the body donation program at the University of Florida's College of Medicine.
