Murugan (Tamil: முருகன்), also known as Kandhan, is an important Hindu god, especially for Tamil people. He is known as the god of war and victory. Many people worship Murugan in India, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Singapore, Malaysia, and other places where Tamils live.
Murugan is believed to be the son of Shiva and Parvati. He was created to protect the Devas (gods) and other living beings from the Asuras. The Asuras were powerful beings who often fought against the gods.

Who is Murugan?
Murugan is a very popular god in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. People have worshipped him there for a very long time. He is often shown riding a peacock, which is his special animal. He also carries a spear called a Vel, which is his main weapon.
Murugan's Family
Murugan's parents are the powerful god Shiva and the goddess Parvati. He also has a famous brother named Ganesha, who is known for his elephant head. Murugan has two consorts (wives): Devasena and Valli.
The Six Holy Homes of Murugan
Murugan has six very important shrines, or holy places, in Tamil Nadu. These are known as the Arupadaiveedu, which means "Six Battle Camps." These places are special because Murugan stayed there while leading his armies. The six places are:

- Pazhamudirsolai
- Thiruthani
- Thiruchendur
Festivals for Murugan
Two of the most important festivals for Murugan are Kanda Sashti and Thaipusam. During these festivals, people offer prayers, sing songs, and sometimes carry offerings as a sign of their devotion. These celebrations are very colorful and lively.
