Khadim Hussain Rizvi (Urdu: خادم حسین رضوی; 22 May 1966 – 19 November 2020) was a well-known Pakistani Islamic scholar and author. He was the founder of Tehreek-e-Labbaik, a political and religious group started in 2015. This group is known for its protests and strong views on certain religious laws in Pakistan.
Rizvi was fluent in several languages, including Urdu, Punjabi, Arabic, and Persian. He was famous for his speeches, where he often spoke in defense of the Islamic prophet, Muhammad. He frequently quoted from the Quran and hadith, as well as the poetry of Imam Ahmed Raza Khan Barelvi and Muhammad Iqbal. He saw these poets as his main inspirations.
Early Life and Education
Khadim Hussain Rizvi was born in 1966 in Pindi Gheb, a town in the Attock District of Punjab. His family belonged to the Awan community. His brother, Ameer Hussain, served in the Pakistan Army before retiring.
Rizvi began his religious education in Jhelum, where he started learning to memorize the Quran to become a hafiz. Later, he joined Jamia Nizamia in Lahore to continue his studies. He became a Hafiz-e-Quran, meaning he had memorized the entire Quran. He also earned the title of Sheikh-ul-Hadith, showing his deep knowledge of Islamic traditions.
For many years, he gave Friday sermons at Pir Makki Masjid in Lahore. This was while he worked for the Punjab Auqaf and Religious Affairs Department. In 2009, he was in a car accident near Gujranwala while traveling from Rawalpindi to Lahore. The driver fell asleep, and as a result, Rizvi became a wheelchair user for the rest of his life.
In 2017, he established the political party called Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP). This party was formed to represent the ideas of Tehreek Labbaik Ya Rasool Allah (TLYP). Rizvi was removed from his government job because he continued to share his strong views on religious laws, even after being warned. After this, he had more time to travel and gather support for his beliefs across the country.
Passing Away
Khadim Hussain Rizvi passed away on 19 November 2020. He was taken to Farooq Hospital in Allama Iqbal Town, Lahore, after collapsing. He was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital. Later, he was moved to Shaikh Zayed Hospital, where his death was officially confirmed at 8:48 PM. He had been unwell for a few days before his death and had used a wheelchair for many years.
His son, Saad Hussain Rizvi, mentioned that his father briefly started breathing again after being declared dead, but then stopped and passed away. The funeral prayers were held at Minar-e-Pakistan in Lahore and were led by Saad. Khadim Hussain Rizvi was buried inside Madrassah Abuzar Ghaffari, which is connected to the Rehmatul Lil Alameen mosque. It is estimated that around 200,000 people attended his funeral. Before his death, Rizvi had a fever and breathing problems, but no tests for COVID-19 or an autopsy were performed. Two days later, on 21 November, his son Saad was appointed as the new leader of TLP.
