Kiels Mountain is a small, quiet area in the countryside of Queensland, Australia. It's part of the Sunshine Coast Region. In 2021, about 714 people lived here. This area is mostly used for homes with large yards, giving it a peaceful, rural feel.

Exploring Kiels Mountain's Geography

Kiels Mountain is named after the mountain itself, which is right in the middle of the area. This mountain is about 153 meters (502 feet) tall. The main highway, the Bruce Highway, runs along its western side.

Several small creeks start on the slopes of Kiels Mountain. These creeks eventually flow into the Maroochy River. Eudlo Creek also passes through the very southeastern tip of Kiels Mountain.

A Look Back at Kiels Mountain's History

The mountain and the area are named after Heinrich "Henry" August Keil. He was an early settler who arrived in Queensland from Germany in 1857. In 1880, he chose land on the eastern side of the mountain. Henry Keil was also the first person to settle in the nearby area of Diddillibah in 1869.

Henry Keil and his wife Elizabeth were well-known members of the Salvation Army on the Sunshine Coast. They were known for being very kind and helpful to the local Aboriginal people.

Around 1930, the spelling of the name was changed from "Keils" to "Kiels Mountain" to make it sound more English.

A Special Spiritual Place

At the very top of Kiels Mountain, you'll find Avatar's Abode. This is a large spiritual retreat that covers about 99 acres (40 hectares). It is dedicated to Meher Baba (1894–1969), a spiritual teacher who visited the site in 1958. Avatar's Abode is the oldest and longest-running Eastern spiritual retreat in Queensland.
