Kim Seung-gyu (Korean: 김승규; born September 30, 1990) is a professional football player from South Korea. He plays as a goalkeeper for the J1 League club FC Tokyo and is also a key player for the South Korea national football team.

Kim's Club Football Journey

Kim Seung-gyu was a very promising young player at Ulsan Hyundai. He joined their main team after finishing middle school. For a long time, he mostly played for the reserve team and his high school team.

Becoming a Top Goalkeeper

In 2013, Kim became Ulsan's main goalkeeper. This happened after he showed amazing skills when the regular goalkeeper was injured. He was even chosen for the K League Best XI (a team of the best players) that year.

When he played for Vissel Kobe, Kim was one of the top three goalkeepers in the J.League in 2016. He was nominated for the J.League Best XI, but another player won the award.

On July 6, 2022, Kim joined Saudi Pro League club Al-Shabab. He had 11 "clean sheets" (games where he didn't let any goals in) in the 2022–23 Saudi Pro League. This was the third-highest number in the league. He also kept clean sheets in four matches during the 2023 Arab Club Champions Cup.

Kim's International Career

Kim Seung-gyu has played many important matches for the South Korea national football team.

Playing in the 2014 World Cup

Kim played his first senior international game on August 14, 2013, against Peru. The game ended in a 0–0 draw, meaning Kim kept a clean sheet in his very first match!

He was part of South Korea's team for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He was the second-choice goalkeeper. After the first two games, he got to play against Belgium. Kim made many great saves, even though Korea lost 1–0. Fans praised him for his excellent performance.

Winning Gold at the 2014 Asian Games

Kim was chosen to play for the South Korean under-23 team in the 2014 Asian Games. He helped his team win a gold medal, which was their first in 28 years! Kim did not let in any goals in the six matches he played. Because of this big win, he was given a special military exemption.

Kim was also selected for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. However, he did not play in any games during that tournament.

The 2022 World Cup Journey

After the 2018 World Cup, the new manager of South Korea, Paulo Bento, trusted Kim a lot. Kim played in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup. He only let in two goals in five matches.

In the qualifying games for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Kim was amazing. He only let in three goals in 14 games, helping South Korea qualify for the World Cup.

In the 2022 World Cup, Kim was the main goalkeeper for South Korea. He played well, letting in only one goal against Uruguay and Portugal in the group stage. In the Round of 16, South Korea played against Brazil and lost 4–1.

Kim was also part of the national team for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup. He played in the first match against Bahrain. Sadly, he got a knee injury and could not play in the rest of the tournament.
