Playing for Clubs
Kim Seung-gyu was a very promising young player at Ulsan Hyundai. He joined their main team after finishing middle school. For a long time, he mostly played for the reserve team or his high school team.
In 2013, he became Ulsan's main goalkeeper. This happened after he showed amazing skills when the regular goalkeeper was injured. He was even chosen for the K League Best XI (a list of the best players) that year.
When Kim played for Vissel Kobe in Japan, he was one of the top three goalkeepers in the J.League in 2016. He was nominated for the J.League Best XI, but another player won the award.
On July 6, 2022, Kim joined Al-Shabab, a club in Saudi Arabia. In the 2022–23 Saudi Pro League season, he had 11 "clean sheets." A clean sheet means he didn't let the other team score any goals in a game. This was the third-highest number in the league!
He also kept clean sheets in four matches during the 2023 Arab Club Champions Cup. However, his team lost in the semi-finals.
Playing for His Country
First Steps in International Football
Kim Seung-gyu played his first game for the senior national team on August 14, 2013. It was against Peru, and the game ended in a 0–0 tie. He kept a clean sheet in his very first international match.
2014 FIFA World Cup Experience
Kim was chosen for South Korea's team for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. He was the second-choice goalkeeper. He didn't play in the first two games.
However, after the first-choice goalkeeper had a tough game against Algeria, Kim was picked to play against Belgium. He made many great saves, but Korea still lost 1–0. Even though they lost, fans praised Kim for his strong performance. He only let in one goal against a top team in his first World Cup game.
Winning Gold at the 2014 Asian Games
Kim was also chosen to play for the South Korean under-23 team in the 2014 Asian Games. He was one of the older players allowed on the team.
Kim helped his team win a gold medal, which was the first time in 28 years for South Korea! He didn't let in any goals in the six matches he played. Because of this big win, he was given a special military exemption.
Kim was part of South Korea's team for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. But the coach chose another goalkeeper as the main player, so Kim did not get to play in that tournament.
Journey to the 2022 FIFA World Cup
After the 2018 World Cup, South Korea's new coach, Paulo Bento, trusted Kim a lot. Kim played in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup, where he let in only two goals in five matches.
In the qualifying games for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Kim was a key player. He only let in three goals in 14 games. This helped South Korea qualify for the World Cup.
In 2022, Kim was the main goalkeeper for South Korea at the World Cup for the first time. During the group stage, some people criticized him for not stopping goals against Ghana. However, he showed his skill by only letting in one goal against strong teams like Uruguay and Portugal. In the Round of 16, his team faced Brazil and lost 4–1.
Injury at the 2023 AFC Asian Cup
Kim was selected for Korea's team for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup. He started in the first match against Bahrain. Sadly, he got a serious knee injury during that game. This injury meant he could not play for the rest of the tournament.
