The Kinsman Range is a beautiful group of mountains in New Hampshire, United States. It's also sometimes called the Cannon–Kinsman Range. These mountains are part of the larger White Mountains. The range stretches from north to south.
The tallest mountain here is Kinsman Mountain, which stands at about 4,358-foot-high (1,328 m). Other important peaks include the North Peak of Kinsman (about 4,293-foot (1,309 m)) and Cannon Mountain (about 4,080-foot (1,240 m)). Cannon Mountain is very popular for rock climbing. All three of these peaks are known as "Four-thousand footers" because they are over 4,000 feet tall. Mount Wolf, at about 3,478-foot (1,060 m), is also part of this range, south of Kinsman Mountain. On the western side, you'll find Bald Peak, which is about 2,470-foot (750 m) tall.
Exploring the Kinsman Range
The Kinsman Range is a great place for outdoor adventures. It has several trails and interesting natural features.
Mountain Connections
To the northeast, the Kinsman Range connects to Cannon Mountain through a ridge called The Cannon Balls. A ridge is like a long, narrow hilltop.
The southwest end of the range is at Kinsman Notch. A "notch" is a low pass between mountains. Kinsman Notch is about 1,870-foot (570 m) high. It's the westernmost of the four main mountain passes in the White Mountains.
Famous Hiking Trails
The Kinsman Ridge Trail is a long path, about 16.9-mile-long (27.2 km). It goes all the way across the Kinsman Range. You can hike it from Kinsman Notch to the northern base of Cannon Mountain.
Part of the famous Appalachian Trail also follows the Kinsman Ridge Trail. The Appalachian Trail is a very long hiking trail that goes through many states. On the Kinsman Range, it starts at Kinsman Notch and goes just north of the North Peak of Kinsman. From there, it turns east towards Lonesome Lake before heading down into the southern part of Franconia Notch.
Water and Rivers
The Kinsman Range is located in Grafton County, near the town of Lincoln. The water that flows from the western side of these mountains eventually reaches Long Island Sound. This happens through a series of rivers:
- The Gale River
- The Ammonoosuc River
- The Connecticut River
On the eastern side, the water flows into the Gulf of Maine. This journey also involves a few rivers:
- The Pemigewasset River
- The Merrimack River
It's pretty cool how water from the same mountain range can end up in different large bodies of water!
