Kirton in Lindsey, often called Kirton Lindsey, is a small market town. It is also a civil parish in North Lincolnshire, England. The town is located about 7 miles (11 km) south-east of Scunthorpe.

A Look Back in Time

Kirton in Lindsey has an interesting past. One famous person connected to the town was Catherine Parr. She was the sixth wife of Henry VIII, a famous English king.

Catherine Parr lived in Kirton-in-Lindsey after she married her first husband, Sir Edward Burgh. Edward's father, Sir Thomas Burgh, 1st Baron Burgh, helped manage the local area. In 1530, Sir Thomas and his son Edward were given a small manor here.

For a long time, Kirton was part of the West Riding of Lindsey in Lincolnshire. In the 1800s, it became part of a larger area called Glanford Brigg.

Later, from 1974 to 1996, it was part of the Glanford district in Humberside. Since 1996, Kirton in Lindsey has been part of North Lincolnshire. The town has its own local government, called the Kirton-in-Lindsey Town Council. They work from the Kirton in Lindsey Town Hall.

Where is Kirton in Lindsey?

In 2011, about 2,873 people lived in Kirton in Lindsey. The town sits partly on top and partly on the side of a hill, which is part of the Lincoln Cliff.

It is about 6 miles (10 km) south of the M180 motorway. It is also about 10 miles (16 km) south of the center of Scunthorpe. The B1398 road from Lincoln to Scunthorpe goes through the town. The B1400 road also passes through, heading down to Messingham.

The A15 road is only about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) to the east. The town has a train station, Kirton Lindsey railway station, but only one train stops there each way on weekdays. There is also a bus route, the 103, which runs between Lincoln and Scunthorpe.

North of the town, on the hill, you can find Mount Pleasant Mill. This mill still makes flour, and there's a bakery next to it that uses the flour to make bread. From here, you can see a great view over the Trent Valley.

Local Shops and Jobs

Kirton in Lindsey has many local shops. You can find them on High Street and in the Market Place. The Market Place also has parking for cars.

Some of the shops include a chemist, a bakery, a sweet shop, and a chocolate and ice cream shop. There are also hairdressers for men and women. You can also find a Spar shop and a Lincolnshire Co-op food shop.

The Kirton in Lindsey Town Hall is in the Market Place. It was built in 1897 to celebrate Queen Victoria's 60 years as queen.

RAF Kirton in Lindsey was an air force base near the town. It closed down at the end of March 2012.

News and Entertainment

People in Kirton in Lindsey get their TV signals from either the Emley Moor or Belmont TV towers.

For radio, they can listen to BBC Radio Lincolnshire, Greatest Hits Radio Lincolnshire, and Hits Radio Lincolnshire. There is also Steel FM, a local radio station based in Scunthorpe. The local newspaper for the town is the Scunthorpe Telegraph.

The main secondary school in the area is Huntcliff School. It is named after Alderman W. Hunt. In 2015, the school received a "good" report from Ofsted, which checks how schools are doing.

There is also a primary school for younger children, called Kirton in Lindsey Primary School.

Places of Worship

St Andrew's United Church is a special church. It brings together three different groups of Christians: Anglican, Methodist, and Baptist. There used to be a Salvation Army Hall in town, which was once a Primitive Methodist church.
