History of Kotor Varoš
People have lived in the Kotor Varoš area for a very long time.
Ancient Times
Archaeologists found an old Roman church (called a basilica) and other Roman items from the 3rd to 5th centuries. These were discovered near the Šiprage area, where the Crkvenica and Vrbanja rivers meet.
Medieval Period
Large, old tombstones called stećci show that people lived here in the 12th century. These tombstones were originally near the Crkvenica-Vrbanja rivers. Some were later moved and used in building walls. One of the best preserved stećci is now underwater in the Vrbanja river.
Some historians think that Kotor Varoš might be the place called "Katera" in an old book from the 10th century. This book, De Administrando Imperio, describes different lands, including Bosnia.
In the 13th century, the town was part of a region called Donji Kraji in the Banate of Bosnia. Later, in the 14th and 15th centuries, it became part of the Kingdom of Bosnia. The Kotor fortress and its nearby town were owned by a noble family called Hrvatinić.
Modern History
From 1878 to 1918, the area was ruled by Austria-Hungary. After that, it became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, which later became Yugoslavia. After World War II, Kotor Varoš was part of the Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, a republic within Yugoslavia.
