Discovering Kuttawa's Past
Kuttawa was founded by Charles Anderson, who used to be the governor of Ohio. He bought the land in 1866. The town's name, Kuttawa, likely came from a Cherokee village that was once nearby.
People disagree about what the name "Kuttawa" means. Some say it means "beautiful," others "city in the woods," or even "great wilderness." The state government officially recognized Kuttawa as a city in 1872. That same year, it got its own post office.
How Lake Barkley Changed Kuttawa
In the early 1960s, a big project changed Kuttawa. The Tennessee Valley Authority built a dam across the Cumberland River. This dam created a large lake called Lake Barkley.
Because of this new lake, parts of Kuttawa and a nearby town called Eddyville had to be moved. Their original locations would have been underwater.
Exploring Kuttawa's Location
Kuttawa is in the northern part of Lyon County. To its east is the city of Eddyville. To the south, it borders Lake Barkley. This lake is a large body of water formed by the Cumberland River.
The city is mostly found near where two roads, U.S. Route 62 and Kentucky Route 295, meet. However, Kuttawa's city limits stretch out in different directions. They go southwest along US 62 and Kentucky Route 810. They also extend northeast to where US 62 meets Interstate 24 and Interstate 69.

The Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area is a large natural area. It sits across the lake from Kuttawa. This area is popular for outdoor activities.
Mineral Mound State Park is another park right next to Kuttawa on its eastern side. Two important dams are also close by. Barkley Dam is southwest of Kuttawa. Kentucky Dam, which holds back the Tennessee River, is also in that area.
Kuttawa is about 32 miles east of Paducah. It is also about 42 miles northwest of Hopkinsville.
