History of LaGrange
LaGrange was first planned and mapped out in 1836. The town was named after LaGrange County.
Early Settlers of LaGrange County
The first people to settle in LaGrange County were from New England. They were descendants of the English Puritans who settled that area long ago. These settlers were part of a big move west into the Northwest Territory. This happened after the Erie Canal was finished, making travel easier.
Many early settlers came from specific counties in Massachusetts and Connecticut. Others came from towns in Vermont. They were often members of the Congregational Church. Over time, many also became Baptists, Pentecostals, or Methodists.
When these settlers arrived, the land was mostly thick forests and wild grasslands. They worked hard to clear roads and build farms. They also built churches, government buildings, and set up mail routes. Because of these settlers, LaGrange County kept a strong connection to early New England culture for many years.
