LaRon Louis Landry (born October 14, 1984) is a former professional football player. He played as a safety in the National Football League (NFL). Landry played college football for the LSU Tigers. He was considered one of the best college players in the country. The Washington Redskins picked him sixth overall in the 2007 NFL draft. He also played for the New York Jets and Indianapolis Colts.

Early Life and High School Football

LaRon Landry was born in Metairie, Louisiana. His parents are Frank and Rhonda Landry. He grew up in Ama, Louisiana. LaRon has two brothers, Derik and Dawan. Dawan also played as a safety in the NFL.

LaRon went to Hahnville High School in Boutte, Louisiana. He was a very talented athlete in high school. Rivals.com, a sports website, ranked him as the fifth-best high school athlete in the entire country.

College Football Career at LSU

Landry went to Louisiana State University (LSU). He played football for the LSU Tigers football team from 2003 to 2006. During his time at LSU, he started 48 games in a row. This shows how important he was to the team.

He finished his college career with 315 tackles and 12 interceptions. His 12 interceptions are the third-highest in LSU history. His 315 tackles rank seventh in the school's history.

Freshman Year Success (2003)

LaRon made a big impact right away in 2003. As a first-year player (true freshman), he started ten games. He helped the Tigers win the BCS National Championship. This is one of the biggest championships in college football.

He had 80 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, and three sacks. He also had two interceptions and blocked one kick. Landry was named to the Freshman All-SEC team. He was also a Second-team All-SEC player and a First-team Freshman All-American.

Sophomore and Junior Seasons (2004-2005)

In 2004, his second year, Landry continued to play well. He was named to the All-SEC second-team. He also made the SEC Academic Honor Roll for his good grades. He started all twelve games. He finished the season with 92 tackles and four interceptions.

In 2005, LSU won the SEC Western Division. They also won the Peach Bowl against Miami. Landry had 70 tackles and three interceptions. He was named a First-team All-SEC player. He was also a Third-team All-American by the Associated Press.

Playing for the Washington Redskins (2007-2011)

The Washington Redskins chose Landry in the first round of the 2007 NFL draft. He was the sixth player picked overall. He signed a five-year contract with the team.

Rookie Season Highlights (2007)

Landry quickly became the starting strong safety for the Redskins. He played alongside Sean Taylor, another great safety. Their combination was called "Area 51" by fans. This name came from their jersey numbers, 21 and 30.

LaRon was known for his hard hits. He recorded his first half-sack in his second game. He got his first full sack in November against the New York Jets. He also had his first interception in a playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks.

After Sean Taylor's death, Landry moved to free safety. He started all 16 games in his first year. He had 95 tackles and 1.5 sacks. His great rookie season earned him a spot as a Pro Bowl alternate. He was also named to the 2007 NFL All-Rookie Defensive Team.

In 2008, Landry made his first regular season interception against the Seattle Seahawks. He finished the season with 65 tackles.

In 2009, Landry played in 15 games. He had one interception against the Oakland Raiders. His best game was against the New Orleans Saints. He had 12 tackles and a sack in that game. He ended the season with 90 tackles.

For the 2010 season, Landry moved back to strong safety. He started the season playing at a "Pro Bowl level." In Week 5, he was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week. He had 13 tackles, forced a fumble, and intercepted Aaron Rodgers. This interception led to the Redskins winning the game. Unfortunately, he injured his Achilles tendon and missed the rest of the season.

In 2011, Landry dealt with more injuries. He missed the first two games with a hamstring strain. He later suffered a groin injury. He was placed on injured reserve in December, ending his season after only eight games. The Redskins decided not to re-sign him after this season.

Time with the New York Jets (2012)

Landry signed a one-year contract with the New York Jets in March 2012. His Achilles tendon was fully healed by June. He made a great debut for the Jets in their first game against the Buffalo Bills. He led the team in tackles. He also made a big tackle on Fred Jackson and forced a fumble.

In Week 3 against the Miami Dolphins, he intercepted Ryan Tannehill. He ran the ball back 18 yards for his first career touchdown. He also made a hard tackle on Reggie Bush. Landry was selected to the 2013 Pro Bowl in December. This was his first time being chosen for the Pro Bowl. He set new personal bests with 100 tackles and four forced fumbles. He also had two interceptions and one touchdown.

Playing for the Indianapolis Colts (2013-2014)

Landry signed a four-year contract with the Indianapolis Colts in March 2013. He played 12 games in 2013. He had 87 tackles and two pass deflections.

In 2014, Landry played 11 games. He had 46 tackles and 2.5 sacks.

Personal Life and Nicknames

LaRon Landry is from Ama, Louisiana. His younger brother, Dawan Landry, also played safety in the NFL. Dawan was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2006.

During his career, Landry had a pet white-faced capuchin monkey named Gucci.

Fans and teammates called Landry "Dirty 30" because of his jersey number (30) and his aggressive playing style. His Redskins teammates also nicknamed him "Iron Man" because of his strong physique.
