Lake Tremblant, also known as Lac Tremblant in French, is a beautiful lake in the Laurentides region of Quebec, Canada. It sits right at the base of Mont Tremblant mountain. The city of Mont-Tremblant is to the south of the lake. The area called Lac-Tremblant-Nord is on the west and north sides.

Lake Tremblant is long and narrow, nestled between mountains. It has about 7 islands and 5 main bays. The lake is surrounded by a thick, mixed forest. This area is a special "transition zone" where two types of forests meet: the deciduous forests from the Saint Lawrence valley and Canada's boreal forests.

A Look Back: Lake Tremblant's History

The forests around Lake Tremblant were first used for logging in the late 1800s. Logs were floated down the Devils River (Rivière du Diable) and the Rouge River. They traveled all the way to a mill in Hawkesbury, Ontario.

In the 1890s, a railroad reached Saint-Jovite. By 1904, it was extended to Tremblant village, near Lac Mercier. This change helped the area shift from logging to tourism. The first summer cottages were built on the lake's shore around 1905. By 1938, there were 33 cottages. The log drives on the lake stopped by the 1940s.

Protecting Lake Tremblant's Nature

In 1895, the forests along the north-east side of Lake Tremblant were set aside as a forest reserve. This reserve later became Mont-Tremblant National Park in 1981. In 1902, a large fire burned the wooded shores. Because of this, the residents formed the municipality of Lac-Tremblant-Nord in 1915. They wanted to protect the land.

This new municipality created rules to protect nature. As a result, the northern and southern parts of the lake are very different. The southern part, within the City of Mont-Tremblant, is a popular recreation area. The northern part is a protected natural area. It has very few roads or people living there permanently.

The beautiful lake and its scenery have inspired many artists. These include French writer (who wrote the novel Helier fils des bois) and painters and Edwin Holgate.
