Mont Tremblant Ski Resort, often called Tremblant, is a popular place to visit all year round. It is located in the Laurentian Mountains of Quebec, Canada. The resort is about 130 km (80 mi) northwest of Montreal.
Tremblant is most famous for its skiing in winter. But in summer, you can swim in Lake Tremblant and play golf on two courses. The name "Mont Tremblant" comes from the Algonquin people. They called it the "trembling mountain." The top of the mountain is 875 m (2,871 ft) high. This makes it one of the tallest peaks in the Laurentians.
The resort is owned by Alterra Mountain Company. Both the mountain and the resort are part of the Mont-Tremblant National Park. They are also close to the village of Mont-Tremblant.

Discovering Mont Tremblant's History
How the Resort Began
In 1938, a man named Joseph Bondurant Ryan came to this area. He was an explorer from a rich family in Philadelphia. He was looking for gold. Joseph Ryan, along with Harry Wheeler and Lowell Thomas, climbed to the top of Mont Tremblant. They used skis with seal skins to help them grip the snow.
After a tough climb, Joseph Ryan decided he wanted to turn this place into a world-class ski village. Just one year later, his dream came true. On February 12, 1939, he opened the Mont Tremblant Lodge. This lodge is still part of the village today.
Growing Popularity and New Owners
Lowell Thomas, a famous American radio broadcaster, loved skiing. He helped make the resort well-known by broadcasting his shows from there. This made Tremblant a top spot for skiers. The resort even named a ski lift and some trails after him and other early fans.
Joseph Bondurant Ryan passed away in 1950. His wife, Mary Rutherfoord Johnson Ryan, ran the resort until 1965. Then, local business people from Quebec bought it. They sold it in 1979. After a few changes in ownership, a company called Intrawest bought the resort in 1991.
Modernizing the Village
Intrawest quickly made the village bigger. They designed it to look like traditional Quebec towns. They also built new ski lifts, including a gondola. Another big change was building the Grand Manitou lodge at the top of the mountain. In 2009, a casino opened at the bottom of the Soleil trails. You can reach the casino by an 8-person gondola from the main resort.
Since 2018, Alterra Mountain Company has owned the resort. They have invested a lot of money to make it even better. In 2018, the Manitou Chalet at the mountain top was improved. For the 2018-2019 winter, a new fast quad ski lift was added. The resort now has 102 ski trails. Alterra has also planned more investments for future seasons, including a new hotel.
Exploring Resort Facilities
The resort is inside Mont-Tremblant National Park. This is a provincial park in the Laurentian Mountains. At the top of the mountain, there is a chalet and cafeteria called Le Grand Manitou. It is open in both winter and summer.
The Pedestrian Village
An open-air gondola called the Cabriolet connects the upper and lower parts of the pedestrian village. From the top of this lift, you can take the main gondola to the mountain's summit. There is also a ski trail that goes through the village. This lets skiers reach the lower part of the village easily.
The Mont Tremblant Resort has many shops for ski and snowboard fans. The main village of Mont-Tremblant is about 5 km (3.1 mi) away.
Where to Stay
Mont Tremblant has many different places to stay. You can find hotels and condos. Many of these are right in the pedestrian village at the base of the mountain.
There are also more condos and chalets near the village. These are managed by the resort's rental company or other private companies. Guests staying here can use a shuttle bus service. This makes it easy to get around, just like staying in the village. Most condos at the resort are privately owned. The resort helps rent them out and takes care of maintenance.
Fun Activities and Sports Areas
Mont Tremblant offers activities all year round. These activities use the beautiful mountains, forests, lakes, and rivers nearby. Most are set up for families and are run by special guides.
- Summer Fun: You can go on all-terrain vehicle tours, boating, canoeing, and cycling. There are also dune buggy tours, fishing, golf, and tennis. You can try helicopter tours, hiking, horseback riding, and lake cruises. Other options include mountain biking, paintball, rafting, rock climbing, and zip-lines.
- Winter Fun: In winter, you can enjoy cross-country skiing, dogsledding, and downhill skiing. Ski schools are available to help you learn. There are also helicopter tours, ice-climbing, ice fishing, and ice skating. You can go paintballing, sleigh riding, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and tubing.
Skiing and Snowboarding
The main resort has over 600 acres (2.4 km2) of ski and snowboard trails. These are spread across four areas: North Side, South Side, Sunny Side, and The Edge. For the 2018-2019 winter season, the resort has 102 ski trails.
- Trail Difficulty:
* 22 trails are easy. * 34 trails are intermediate (medium difficulty). * 42 trails are difficult. * 15 trails are for experts.
- Other Features: There are three snow parks and twenty official glade areas (skiing through trees).
The resort has 14 ski lifts. This includes 3 gondolas. One is an open-air gondola in the village. Another is the Télécabine Casino Express. There are also 6 fast detachable chairlifts, 2 regular chairlifts, and 3 magic carpets. The open-air gondola helps skiers get from the parking lot to the mountain's base. All 14 lifts can carry 27,230 skiers every hour!
Exploring the Surrounding Area

The hills and valleys around Tremblant are full of trails. You can use them for cross-country skiing and hiking. The cross-country ski trails connect to other trails in nearby towns. This means you can go on ski trips that last several days. You could even ski as far south as Blainville, Quebec, near Montreal. The cross-country ski network is over 100 km long. Much of it follows the Diable river and its nearby forest.
The valleys of the Mont-Tremblant National Park have small lakes. They also have thick boreal forests and many vacation cottages. You can find world-class golf courses, hiking trails, and small rivers perfect for canoeing and swimming.
There are also many trails for mountain bikes. A special paved path called "route verte" is great for road bicycles. This path was built on an old railway line. So, cyclists do not have to share the path with cars.
