Early Life and High School Football
Lardarius Webb grew up in Alabama and went to Beauregard High School. He was a star player in high school, playing both quarterback and cornerback. As a junior, he ran for over 1,000 yards and scored 12 touchdowns. He also passed for 731 yards and six touchdowns. On defense, he was a strong tackler and had seven interceptions.
In his senior year, Webb continued to shine. He rushed for 738 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also passed for 412 yards and four touchdowns. On defense, he made 52 tackles and led the state of Alabama with 10 interceptions. Because of his amazing skills, Webb was named a first-team all-state defensive back in both his junior and senior years. He was also named Team MVP and played in the Mississippi/Alabama All-Star Game.
College Football Journey
Playing for Southern Mississippi
In 2004, Webb started his college football career at the University of Southern Mississippi. He played in all 12 games during his first year with the Golden Eagles. In his second year, he was one of the team's top tacklers, showing his defensive strength.
Excelling at Nicholls State
Webb moved to Nicholls State University in 2007. In his very first game for the Colonels, he made three interceptions, returning one for a touchdown! Later that season, the coaches decided to let Webb play quarterback too. This was a smart move because he had played option quarterback in high school.
In his first game as a quarterback, Webb rushed for 120 yards and scored a touchdown. After the season, he was named a first-team All-American. He also became the only player in NCAA Division I history to win Offensive, Defensive, and Special Teams Player of the Week awards in the same season. Webb was also a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, given to the best defensive player in college football's Football Championship Subdivision.
Professional Football Career
Joining the Baltimore Ravens
The Baltimore Ravens chose Lardarius Webb in the third round of the 2009 NFL draft. He was the 88th player picked overall.
2009 Season Highlights
Webb quickly became the Ravens' main kick returner. In Week 8, he returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown against the Denver Broncos. Sadly, in December, he suffered a serious knee injury (a torn ACL) and missed the rest of his rookie season. Even with the injury, he showed he was a top cornerback, especially good at tackling. He finished the year with 35 tackles and a touchdown return.
2010 Season Performance
On November 8, 2010, Webb got his first career interception against the Miami Dolphins. He returned it for 32 yards. By the end of the season, he had 54 tackles and two interceptions. He was also praised for his ability to defend against long passes.
2011 Season Success
In 2011, injuries to other players meant Webb became a full-time starter. He played incredibly well, showing he was the team's most talented cornerback. Many people thought he should have been chosen for the Pro Bowl. He had five interceptions during the regular season, including a 73-yard touchdown return against the New York Jets. He was the only starting defensive back who didn't allow a touchdown all season!
On December 4, 2011, Webb returned a punt 68 yards for a touchdown against the Cleveland Browns. This was his first punt return touchdown. He finished the season with 68 tackles and five interceptions. He also added three more interceptions in the playoffs.
2012 Season and Super Bowl Win
Before the 2012 season, Webb signed a big contract extension with the Ravens. He started the year strong, but in Week 6, he tore his ACL again. This injury ended his season early. Even though he was hurt, the Ravens went on to win Super Bowl XLVII, beating the San Francisco 49ers 34-31. Webb was a Super Bowl champion!
2013 Season Return
Webb worked hard to recover from his injury. On November 10, 2013, he got his first interception since his injury against the Cincinnati Bengals. He had another interception later that season, also against the Bengals. He finished the 2013 season with 63 tackles and two interceptions.
Later Seasons (2014-2017)
In the 2014 season, Webb played in 13 games and had one interception and 55 tackles. In 2015, he played in 15 games, recording one interception and 55 tackles.
Before the 2016 season, Webb changed his position from cornerback to free safety. This showed his versatility as a player. In 2017, he was released by the Ravens but then re-signed a new contract. In the first game of the 2017 season, he had an interception against the Cincinnati Bengals. He also got another interception in Week 2 against the Cleveland Browns. Webb was released by the Ravens again in March 2018.
