Lasne is a small town, also called a municipality, in Wallonia, a region in Belgium. It is located in the province of Walloon Brabant, which is south-east of Brussels.
In 2008, about 14,043 people lived in Lasne. The total area of the municipality is 47.22 square kilometers. This means there are about 297 people living in each square kilometer. Lasne is known as the richest municipality in Wallonia. This is measured by how much money people earn on average. It also has the lowest local taxes in all of Belgium. This means people pay less money to their local government.
The municipality of Lasne is made up of several smaller villages. These include Couture-Saint-Germain, Lasne-Chapelle-Saint-Lambert, Maransart, Ohain, and Plancenoit. Plancenoit also includes a tiny village called Marache. Even though the municipality is named Lasne, its main offices are in the village of Ohain.

Villages of Lasne
Ohain: A Village Green
Ohain has a special village green. It is shaped almost like a triangle and slopes gently. Many old trees grow on the green. Old houses and shops border two sides of this peaceful area. The church in Ohain was built around the year 1200. Its strong, square tower is from that time.
Couture-Saint-Germain: An Old Abbey
In the village of Couture-Saint-Germain, you can find the ruins of the Cistercian Abbey of Aywiers. This abbey has been a place for special visits, called pilgrimages, since the late 1800s. People visit to honor Saint Lutgarde. She lived there for 30 years in the early 1200s.
Plancenoit: Battle of Waterloo Site
A part of the famous Battle of Waterloo was fought in the village of Plancenoit. This battle took place around the church and a strong farm called La Papelotte. People say that the cemetery wall still has holes from musket balls. These were fired during the battle.
It was in Plancenoit that Blücher's soldiers fought against Napoleon's army. Blücher's troops had marched all the way from Wavre. After the battle, Blücher and Wellington met at a farm called 'La Belle Alliance'. Today, this farm is a bar. The historic area that remembers the battle is managed by Lasne, Waterloo, and Braine-l'Alleud.
Geography of Lasne
The municipality gets its name from the Lasne river. This river starts in the village of Plancenoit. It then flows through several of the villages that make up the municipality. The name Lasne comes from an old Celtic word. It means "flat" or "calm." This probably describes how slow the river moves.
Lasne is in a part of Belgium known as the Pays Romain, or Roman Land. A big road called the Grand Chemin goes through the municipality. It connects the large towns of Wavre and Nivelles. This road was once part of a network of Roman roads. These roads linked ports on the Rhine and Seine rivers to seaports. The distance between small chapels along this path is equal to one or more Gaulish leagues. A Gaulish league was about 2,222 meters (2,430 yards) long.
Economy and Life in Lasne
Lasne is a semi-rural municipality. This means it has both town areas and countryside. It still has several working farms. About 66% of the land is rural. Of that, 66% is used for farming. The rest is made up of forests and open spaces. In the past, Lasne had a silk factory and sand mining. However, there are no longer any industries in the municipality today.
In 2007, Lasne was still considered the richest municipality in Belgium. The average taxable income was 40,949 euros per year. This information comes from the INS (Institut National de Statistique).
Twin Towns
Lasne is connected with two other towns around the world. These are called "twin towns." They are Azay-le-Rideau in France and Abbeville, Louisiana in the USA.
