LeSean Kamel McCoy (born July 12, 1988), known as "Shady", is a former professional football running back. He played in the National Football League (NFL). McCoy played college football for the Pittsburgh Panthers. The Philadelphia Eagles picked him in the second round of the 2009 NFL draft.

McCoy became a top player for the Eagles. He broke many team records. Later, he played for the Buffalo Bills, Kansas City Chiefs, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He won two Super Bowls, one with the Chiefs and one with the Buccaneers. He is known as one of the best running backs of his time.

Early Life and High School Football

LeSean McCoy was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. His mother gave him the nickname "Shady". She called him that because his moods could change quickly. One moment he was happy, the next he might be upset.

He went to Bishop McDevitt High School in Harrisburg. He played high school football there. As a sophomore, he once ran for 406 yards in a single game. In his junior year, he gained 2,828 yards and scored 35 touchdowns. He was named the Associated Press Class AAAA player of the year. During his senior year, he had a serious ankle injury. This injury made his future in football uncertain.

In 2012, Bishop McDevitt High School retired McCoy's high school jersey number, 20. This is a big honor, and only one other player from his school has had their number retired.

College Football Career

McCoy joined the University of Pittsburgh football team in 2007. As a freshman, he quickly became a key player. He rushed for over 1,300 yards and scored 14 touchdowns. He was named to the Freshman All-American team. He also helped his team beat the #2 ranked West Virginia Mountaineers. This win stopped West Virginia from playing in the national championship game.

In his second year (2008), McCoy was one of the best running backs in college football. He rushed for 1,488 yards and scored 21 touchdowns. His 21 rushing touchdowns were almost the most in the nation. He was chosen as a second-team All-American. After his sophomore year, McCoy decided to enter the NFL Draft.

The 2011 season was amazing for McCoy. He scored 17 rushing touchdowns, which led the entire NFL. He also had 20 total touchdowns, leading the league in that category too. He broke the Eagles' single-season touchdown records. He rushed for 1,309 yards and was named first-team All-Pro. He was also chosen for the Pro Bowl.

In 2012, McCoy signed a new contract with the Eagles. He played in 12 games that year.

The 2013 season was another record-breaking year for McCoy. He led the NFL with 1,607 rushing yards. This broke the Eagles' single-season rushing record that had stood for 34 years. He also had the most total yards from scrimmage in the league with 2,146 yards. He earned another All-Pro selection and Pro Bowl nod.

In 2017, McCoy reached a big milestone. He became the 30th NFL player to gain over 10,000 career rushing yards. He also helped the Bills end a 17-year playoff drought. This meant the team made it to the playoffs for the first time in a long time. He was named to his sixth Pro Bowl.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

In 2020, McCoy signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He had a smaller role on the team. However, he won his second Super Bowl, Super Bowl LV, with the Buccaneers. This was special because they beat his former team, the Kansas City Chiefs, in the Super Bowl. He became one of only a few players to win two Super Bowls in a row with different teams.

Retirement

LeSean McCoy announced his retirement from the NFL on October 1, 2021. He signed a special one-day contract with the Eagles to retire as a member of the team. He finished his career with exactly 15,000 total yards from scrimmage.

Playing Style

McCoy was known for his amazing ability to change direction very quickly. He could "cut on a dime," which means he could stop and turn instantly. This made him very hard for defenders to tackle. His playing style helped him avoid big hits, which allowed him to play for a long time in the NFL.

Personal Life

LeSean McCoy has a brother, LeRon McCoy, who also played football as a wide receiver. LeSean has one son and one daughter.

He lived in Marlton, New Jersey, for some time. When he was traded to the Buffalo Bills, he wasn't sure about leaving Philadelphia. But he grew to love Buffalo and its fans. He even wrote a letter to Bills fans to thank them for their support.

In 2017, McCoy joined other NFL players in protests during the national anthem. He said that while the flag was important, he could not support a leader who was "acting like a jerk." The Bills team discussed how they would respond to these issues together.
