History of Leavening
Leavening is mentioned in a very old book called the Domesday Book. This book was a huge survey of England made in 1086. It shows that Leavening had 10 households back then. These households included 5 villagers and 5 smallholders. They also had 3 "ploughlands," which were areas of land used for farming. At that time, Leavening was part of a larger area known as Acklam.
By 1823, Leavening had grown to a population of 294 people. Many different jobs were done in the village. There were farmers, people who grew plants (nurserymen), carpenters, and grocers. You could also find shoemakers, a blacksmith, a corn miller, and a tailor. There was even a butcher and someone who made linen cloth. The village also had a schoolmaster and a pub called The Hare & Hounds.
In the 1820s, two types of Methodist churches were built in Leavening. Later, in 1850, a small Anglican church was built. This building was special because it also served as a school. The main church for the area was in nearby Acklam. By 1891, Leavening's population had reached 339 people. The school had about 55 students attending each day.
Village Life and Places
Leavening has a few important places that make up village life. These include a pub, a church, and a primary school.
The Jolly Farmers Inn
The village pub is called The Jolly Farmers Inn. It's a popular spot and has even won awards! In 1997, it was named 'pub of the year' by York CAMRA. It also won 'country pub of the season' in summer 2014. Before it became The Jolly Farmers Inn, it was known as the Board Inn. Even further back, it used to be a blacksmith's workshop. This pub is famous for hosting the annual 'World Championship Yorkshire Pudding Eating Competition'.
The Venerable Bede Church
The church in Leavening is called The Venerable Bede. It was built in 1850. At first, it was used as both a school and a small church connected to the main church in Acklam. In 1965, it became a full Parish Church for Leavening. It was then named after the Venerable Bede, a famous English monk and historian. Today, the church is used by both the Anglican and Methodist church groups in the village. Old records from the church, going back to 1716, are kept safe in the Borthwick Institute in York.
Leavening County Primary School
Leavening County Primary School opened in 1906. It has been made bigger several times, with new parts added in 1963, 2003, and 2007. The school teaches children from 3 to 11 years old. It can have up to 70 students and serves children from Leavening and several nearby villages. In May 2015, the school received a 'Good' rating in an Ofsted report. Ofsted is an organization that inspects schools in England.
