Early Life and Barcelona
When Lee was just 12 years old, he became famous in the football world. He was the top scorer in the 2010 Danone Nations Cup. This is a very important youth football tournament. Because of his amazing skills, FC Barcelona noticed him.
He joined Barcelona's special youth academy, called La Masia. In his first season there, he scored an incredible 39 goals in 29 games. He was also named the best player in four different youth tournaments. People even started calling him the "Korean Messi" because he was so good.
However, there was a problem. Rules from FIFA (the world football organization) stopped him from playing in regular games for three years. This ban lasted until he turned 18. On March 13, 2016, he finally got to play his first senior game for Barcelona's B team, Barcelona B.
Club Career Highlights
Playing in Italy: Hellas Verona
On August 31, 2017, Lee moved to Italy. He joined a club called Hellas Verona in Serie A. This is Italy's top football league. He signed a four-year deal.
He made his first Serie A appearance on September 24. On May 6, 2018, he scored his first goal in Serie A against Milan. Even though he scored, his team lost that game. Verona was later moved down to a lower league, Serie B.
In the 2018–19 Serie B season, Lee scored one goal and helped with two others in 27 games. Verona then won promotion back to Serie A. But Lee was not part of their plans for the next season.
Moving to Belgium: Sint-Truiden
On August 30, 2019, Lee joined Sint-Truiden in Belgium's top league, the Belgian First Division A. For a long time, he was not chosen to play in games. This caused a lot of discussion in South Korea.
He finally played his first Belgian league game on December 26. His first season ended early because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He only played four games that season.
On September 13, 2020, he scored his first two goals for Sint-Truiden. However, his team still lost the game. After this, he struggled to score in other games where he started. Some journalists in South Korea suggested he should return to play in his home country.
In February 2021, Lee went on loan to Portimonense in Portugal. He played four games there but did not make a big impact. He left the club when his loan ended.
Returning Home: Suwon FC
In December 2021, Lee came back to his hometown of Suwon. He signed a deal with K League 1 club Suwon FC. The K League 1 is South Korea's top football league.
When he first joined Suwon FC, Lee still had some weaknesses like physical strength and defense. But his accurate shots and quick moves really stood out in South Korea. In his first K League 1 season, he scored many goals. He was even chosen as one of the best left wingers in the league.
In his second season, opponents started to understand his playing style better. But he still scored the most goals for his team. He helped Suwon FC avoid being moved down to a lower league. He even received an offer from an Italian club, Frosinone. But he decided to stay in South Korea after his difficult times in Europe.
In the first half of the 2024 season, Lee played incredibly well. He scored ten goals very quickly. Another big club in the same league, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, offered him the highest salary in the league.
New Chapter: Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors
