Early Life and Youth Career
When Lee was 12 years old, he became famous in the football world. He was the top scorer in the 2010 Danone Nations Cup. This is a very important youth football tournament.
He then joined FC Barcelona's youth academy, called La Masia. In his first season, he scored 39 goals in 29 games. He was also named the best player in four different youth tournaments. Because of his amazing talent, people started calling him the "Korean Messi".
However, there was a rule from FIFA about transferring young players. This rule stopped him from playing in regular games for three years. He could not play until he turned 18. On March 13, 2016, he played his first senior game for the B team.
Club Football Journey
Playing for Hellas Verona
On August 31, 2017, Lee joined Serie A club Hellas Verona in Italy. He signed a four-year contract. Barcelona had the option to buy him back later, but they did not use it.
He played his first Serie A game for Verona on September 24. This was against Lazio. On May 6, 2018, he scored his first goal in Serie A against Milan. However, his team lost that game 4–1.
Verona finished 19th in the league and moved down to Serie B. Lee scored one goal and helped with two others in 27 games during the 2018–19 Serie B season. Verona then won their way back up to Serie A. But Lee was not part of their plans for the next season.
Time at Sint-Truiden
On August 30, 2019, Lee moved to Sint-Truiden in Belgium. For 12 games in a row, he was not chosen to play. This caused a lot of talk in South Korea.
He finally played his first Belgian league game on December 26 against Waasland-Beveren. His first season ended early because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He only played four games.
On September 13, 2020, he scored his first two goals for Sint-Truiden against Royal Antwerp. But his team still lost 3–2. He struggled to score in other games where he started. Some journalists in South Korea suggested he should play back home.
On February 1, 2021, Lee went on loan to Portimonense in Portugal for six months. He found it hard to make a big impact there. He left Portimonense when his loan ended.
Returning to Suwon FC
In December 2021, Lee came back to his hometown of Suwon, South Korea. He signed a multi-year deal with K League 1 club Suwon FC.
Lee still had some challenges with his physical strength and defense. But his accurate shots and quick moves were very good in South Korea. In his first K League 1 season, he scored many goals. He was chosen as one of the best left wingers for the K League Best XI.
In his second season, opponents learned his weaknesses, making it harder for him. But he still scored the most goals for his team. This helped Suwon FC avoid moving down to a lower league. He received an offer from an Italian club, Frosinone, but he decided to be careful after his tough time in Europe.
In the first half of the 2024 season, his third season at Suwon, Lee was playing incredibly well. He had already scored double-digit goals. Another team in the same league, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, offered him the highest salary in the league during the summer transfer period.
