Portimonense Sporting Clube is a sports club from Portimão, a city in Portugal. It was started on August 14, 1914. The club is best known for its professional football (soccer) team.

The team currently plays in the Liga Portugal 2. This is the second-highest football league in Portugal. Portimonense also has youth teams and a team for veteran players. Besides football, the club has teams for basketball.

The club's home stadium is the Estádio Municipal de Portimão. It is located in Portimão, which is the second-largest city in the Algarve region. The stadium can hold 4,961 fans after being updated in 2011.

Portimonense has not won any major national trophies. However, they have played in the Primeira Liga, Portugal's top league, for many seasons. The club's best time was in the 1980s. During this decade, they always played in the top division. They even competed in the UEFA Cup in the 1985–86 season. They also reached the semi-finals of the Taça de Portugal (Portuguese Cup) three times. This happened in 1983, 1987, and 1988.

Club History: Portimonense's Journey

Portimonense was often seen in the Primeira Liga, which is Portugal's first division. In the 1984–85 season, they finished fifth. This was their best league finish ever. During that season, they even had 0–0 draws at home against big clubs like Benfica and Sporting CP.

This strong performance allowed them to play in the UEFA Cup in the 1985–86 season. However, they were knocked out in the first round by FK Partizan from Yugoslavia.

Ups and Downs in the Leagues

In the 1990s and 2000s, Portimonense mostly played in the Segunda Liga, which is the second division. They also spent a short time in the third level.

In the 2009–10 season, Portimonense earned promotion back to the top league after 20 years. They finished second in the Liga de Honra, just behind S.C. Beira-Mar. A goal by Wilson Eduardo helped them secure this promotion.

However, in the 2010–11 season, they were relegated back to the second division. The next season, 2011–12, they were set to be relegated again. But, another team, Varzim S.C., could not be promoted due to money problems. This meant Portimonense was allowed to stay in the second division.

Portimonense won the 2016–17 LigaPro title. This brought them back to the top flight after six years. Their coach, Vítor Oliveira, had started his coaching career with the club many years before. He was known for helping teams get promoted.

In the 2019–20 season, Portimonense was almost relegated again. But, two other teams, Vitória de Setúbal and C.D. Aves, had issues outside of football. Because of this, those teams were relegated instead, and Portimonense stayed in the top division.
