Portimonense Sporting Clube is a sports club from Portimão, Portugal. It was started on August 14, 1914. The club is best known for its professional football team. This team currently plays in the Liga Portugal 2. This is the second-highest football league in Portugal.

Portimonense also has many youth teams and a team for older players. They also have teams for basketball. The club's stadium is called Estádio Municipal de Portimão. It is in Portimão, which is the second-largest city in the Algarve region. The stadium can hold 4,961 fans. The club has not won any major trophies. However, it has played in the top league, the Primeira Liga, for many seasons.

The 1980s were a great time for Portimonense. The team played in the top division for the whole decade. They even played in the UEFA Cup in the 1985–86 season. This is a big European competition. Portimonense also reached the semi-finals of the Taça de Portugal (Portuguese Cup) three times. This happened in 1983, 1987, and 1988.

Club History

Portimonense often played in the Portuguese first division. In the 1984–85 season, they finished fifth. This was their best finish ever. They even had 0–0 draws at home against big teams like Benfica and Sporting CP. Because of their good performance, they got to play in the UEFA Cup in the 1985–86 season. They were knocked out in the first round by FK Partizan from Yugoslavia.

Playing in Lower Divisions

In the 1990s and 2000s, the club mostly played in the Segunda Liga. This is the second division. They also spent a short time in the third division. In the 2009–10 season, Portimonense started with coach Lito Vidigal. When he left, Litos took over. He led the team to finish second, behind S.C. Beira-Mar. This meant they returned to the top league after 20 years. A player named Wilson Eduardo scored the winning goal against U.D. Oliveirense to make sure they were promoted.

In the middle of the 2010–11 season, Litos was fired because of poor results. Portimonense ended up second from last and was sent back down to the second division. The same thing happened in the next season. They finished even lower. However, Varzim S.C. was not allowed to move up from the third division due to money problems. This meant Portimonense was allowed to stay in the second division.

Return to the Top League

Portimonense won the 2016–17 LigaPro and returned to the top league after six years. The team was coached by Vítor Oliveira. He had started his coaching career with the club many years before. This was his fifth promotion in a row as a coach. The team was set to be relegated on the last day of the 2019–20 season. Other teams like C.D. Tondela and Vitória de Setúbal also won their games. However, Portimonense stayed in the top division. This was because of problems with other clubs, Vitória de Setúbal and C.D. Aves, which led to them being relegated instead.
