Lee Yuan-tsu (born September 24, 1923 – died March 8, 2017) was an important politician from Taiwan. He was a member of the Kuomintang political party. Lee Yuan-tsu served as the eighth Vice President of the Republic of China under President Lee Teng-hui. His family came from the Hakka people, a special group in China.

Early Life and Education

Lee Yuan-tsu was born in Pingjiang, Hunan province. His family was Hakka, originally from Meixian, Guangdong.

He studied law and politics at National Chengchi University in Nanjing. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1946. In 1949, after the Chinese Civil War, he moved to Taiwan from Mainland China. Later, in 1963, he earned his doctoral degree from the University of Bonn in Germany.

Political Career Highlights

Lee Yuan-tsu began his career in politics in 1969. He first worked as a legal advisor for the Ministry of National Defense.

He held several important government positions:

  • From 1974 to 1978, he was the Minister of Education.
  • From 1978 to 1984, he served as the Minister of Justice.
  • From 1988 to 1990, he was the Secretary-General to the President. This role is like a chief of staff for the president.

Becoming Vice President

In 1988, after President Chiang Ching-kuo passed away, Lee Teng-hui became the new president. President Lee Teng-hui chose Lee Yuan-tsu to be the next Vice President of the Republic of China.

Lee Yuan-tsu was elected Vice President by the National Assembly on March 21, 1990. He was the last vice president chosen by the National Assembly. After his term, Taiwan started having direct elections where people could vote for the president and vice president directly. He served as Vice President from May 20, 1990, until May 19, 1996.

Life After Politics

After leaving politics in 1996, Lee Yuan-tsu went back to teaching. He returned to his old university, National Chengchi University.

His wife passed away in 1998. Later, he moved to Toufen in Miaoli County, where he lived a quiet life away from public attention.

In his later years, Lee Yuan-tsu had kidney problems and received special medical treatment. Before he passed away, he stopped eating and only received nutrients through injections. He told his doctors that he wanted to pass away peacefully and did not wish for extreme medical efforts to keep him alive.

Lee Yuan-tsu passed away from kidney failure on March 8, 2017, at his home in Miaoli County. He was 93 years old.
